Auto photography reflecting on the home and environment and what helps the participant take the workspace into the home space during school.

Having a participant take photos of what inspires them through the medium of a camera. The participant has little experience with a camera and does not know how to operate the settings. The camera was set on auto mode, but I still had to explain a few things while he was taking photos. CODE: I assumed he would have known to work the camera. Did I make a gender assumption since photography is a male-dominated field? What are the statistics between men and women photographers? Do more men or women know how to work a camera?

Initial Setting: In the house environment, the participant only explored the main floor of the house, the office space, kitchen, and living room. He decided to stay in the house, all of his photos are within the home.

The first impression, he seems nervous with the camera, he is confused with a lot of the camera settings, he was frustrated with the technology that was causing blurry photos. He says things like, “why is it always blurry? How can I put the camera in auto?[camera was in automode] He was unsure sometimes walking with the camera, but also seemed excited about the task. He walked around the rooms a lot looking and searching for the objects. I repeated the question a few times and I also said it can be objects and beings. (CODE: Participant was asking questions showing they were active in the study and trying to think things through and wanting to understand the photo process.)

Significant information: He was walking around the house for his photo subjects, most of the photos were taken in his desk workspace by the computer. [he thinks about some objects related directly to learning products such as the printer, but other things such as the dog could indirectly help him with his schooling. The dog may give him emotional support during stressful times or the dog was conveniently there in the same room for him to reflect on the dog? The coffee mug could be interpreted to help him focus and have energy.]
The dog just observes while lying on his bed. what is the dog thinking about what we are doing?] CODE: Did a living, but non-human being become a part of the research?

Surprises, he goes to the patio, to look outdoors to see if he reflects on anything outdoors that helps him study. [the outdoor environment, being in nature can certainly bring inspiration for school work, or reflect on the relationship between human and non-human? What was he looking for wildlife, nature, the toolshed? ] CODE: I am assuming the participant is thinking of another environment (the outdoors), but he could have seen something that caught his eye at that moment, like a rabbit in the garden?

[What remains unsaid. I do not go into detail or describe how to operate the camera, I thought it was best to let him explore on his own and focus on the ideas, not the technology. What I should have done was given him another smaller, lighter, and easier to use a camera. The unsaid power dynamics in the sibling relationship. CODE: This not is relevant to explain the relationship between the participant and researcher, how they know each other. I am the older sister so his questions to function the camera could be from asking advice from someone that is older than him and could have more knowledge and experience than him. CODE: The power dynamics are unfair because he knows the researcher personally, what would it look like with a stranger? Can I process a study like this during COVID times and how?
He also knows I know how to use the camera. What also remains silent is the environment, he does not leave the main floor of the home because these are the spaces he occupies the most while doing school?]

B. Ethnographic methodology, visual anthropology, participant observation. This method of research helps to take away power dynamics, it is an attempt for the participant to put the power in their hands how they themselves want to be represented in a study. I did ask permission if the participant was interested in doing an experimental research approach and if they were willing to give up some of their time while they were working on a school assignment. I tried to help with the camera settings, but I did not think it was necessary to go in-depth about the camera settings. I do regret giving them a camera with no flash, another camera would have put the participant in less distress because they were not satisfied with the photo results. The power results become conflicted because they do not feel like they have control over the tool.

The camera is an example of a creative tool to help express themselves and choose to photograph what they want, instead of the researcher asking specific questions looking for specific responses in a written or survey form. I was able to witness and watch how a participant approaches a question and seeks inspiration and then use the camera as a document. There are however two forms of documentation going on, a document made by the participant with taking pictures and I am also creating a document through writing, drawing, and also photographing in a fieldnote about their behaviours (reactions) and approaches.
This study took place in a home environment, this is a very personal space where a person is most comfortable but also vulnerable. If this study was in a stranger's home I would have to be respectful that I as a researcher would be entering their space and writing down the appropriate information that focuses on the study. My fieldnotes are only observations and my interpretations of photos. I did not ask further interview questions for the meanings behind the photos, which is controversial because I do not know the background or symbolism behind the photos from another person. My views are not the participant's views, what I interpret can be wrong, and based on assumptions. Some participants may not want me to photograph them in their homes, I would need to ask for their consent before taking photos and in their private property spaces.

What is the meaning of the fireplace to help him with studying, my own interpretation:
The fireplace could be the symbol representing the home and further enhance the work at home environment. Fireplaces give off warmth, Is he referring to his other senses while studying, such as working in a warm temperature, does he work better when his body temperature is warmer or cooler? Does it symbolize comfort, does he like to be comfortable while working? I am unsure if he is referring to the symbolism of the fireplace or the literal temperature in the house?

This was his first photo. He immediately went to the look for this cup after I asked him the research question. I think the meaning is clear behind this photograph, it is a coffee cup, this object is an example of energy. He drinks coffee or tea as a souce of caffeine to help him focus with his studies. It is interesting to note he picked this specific cup with the B initial. His name is Benjamin so the B represents his name. Was this an example of linear thinking and processing? Was he thinking in when I start to study for the day what is the first thing that helps me?
