Marriage was to represent eternity and an everlasting union. 

The rituals of Marriage varied from culture to culture. Some cultures were endogamous, meaning they had to marry into their own social class, family, tribe, or clan. exogamous, (Different regions of social groups), and polygamists. 

In European marriages, the act was viewed as a civil institution. Christian Theologian, Augustine, wrote about marriage around 5AD and the church started taking interest in the ceremony. In the 12th Century, the Church finally named Marriage as a sacrament.
