Usrah Week 1: Adab In Learning Knowledge

Assalamualaikum, and hi! For our first week of Usrah, we started things off with an Icebreaking session, to get to know everyone in the usrah group. Afterwards, we started with our Usrah session, with our facilitator, Br. Hakimi, sharing about our first topic for Usrah which is Adab In Learning Knowledge.

Adab, or proper manners in seeking knowledge, does play a huge role in how we approach our learning. It really helps us stay sincere and stay humble throughout the process of education. Here are some key points I got from the session on Adab in learning:

Sincerity (Ikhlas): It's important that we learn with the right intention, which is to please Allah and improve ourselves, not for recognition or to show off.

Humility (Tawadu'): No matter how much we learn, staying humble is key. We should always remember that our knowledge is limited, and only Allah is All-Knowing.

Respect for Teachers: Having respect for our teachers is crucial. This means listening carefully, being patient, and appreciating the effort and knowledge they share with us.

Patience (Sabr): The journey of seeking knowledge isn’t always easy, and it requires us to be patient and consistent, even when things get tough.

These adab help us not only gain knowledge but also to use it in a way that benefits us and those around us. I'm glad to have learned about this and hope to use this knowledge for the foreseeable future!

Throughout all the usrah sessions, one thing for sure is that our facilitator, Br. His explanation have all been clear and I had a great time in all of our sessions.

A few suggestions I'd like to add is that the usrah session can be a bit more interactive, like how we can play a little game like a quiz, to enjoy it more, while also gaining the knowledge from our session.

Another suggestion I have is that we could sometimes have open discussions where everyone gets a chance to share their thoughts or experiences related to the topic.

Assalamualaikum, and hi to all!

For this Usrah 2 session for this semester, we explored the topic of Preparing for Solat with Khusyu’, an essential aspect of performing prayers with sincerity and full devotion to Allah. Our facilitator shared insightful points on the significance of khusyu’ and how we can cultivate it in our daily prayers.

Why is Khusyu’ Important?

Khusyu’ in solat is not just about physical stillness but also about achieving inner peace and humility before Allah. It strengthens our connection with Him and ensures that our solat is meaningful rather than just a routine action.

The Quran emphasizes this in Surah Al-Mu’minun (1-2):
"Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive."

Scholars explain that khusyu’ involves both the heart and body—it means feeling fear and awe of Allah while also maintaining calmness and focus in prayer.

How to Prepare for Solat with Khusyu’?

To develop khusyu’, we need to start with proper preparation:

Purification (Taharah): Ensuring our body, clothes, and prayer space are clean from impurities.

Mental and Physical Readiness: Clearing our mind from distractions and setting a sincere intention.

Understanding the Meanings of Recitations: Reflecting on what we recite during solat helps us stay engaged.

Minimizing Distractions: Praying in a quiet place and avoiding hunger, tiredness, or urgent needs before solat.

Maintaining Khusyu’ in Solat

Once we begin solat, we should focus on every movement and recitation, slow down, and reflect on the significance of each action.
Usrah 2 Week 4: The Virtues Found In Solat with Khusyu'

Assalamualaikum, and hi!

For Week 4 of Usrah 2, we learned about a really important topic—The Virtues Found in Solat with Khusyu’. Solat is one of the most significant aspects of a Muslim’s daily life, but without khusyu’, it can easily become just a routine rather than a true connection with Allah.

What is Khusyu’ in Solat?
Khusyu’ means having full focus, sincerity, and humility in our prayers. So it’s not just about standing still, but about truly feeling present in our solat. In Surah Al-Mu’minun (1-2), Allah tells us:
*"Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive."*

The Prophet Muhammad SAW also mentioned that when a person performs wudu’ properly and prays with humility and focus, their past minor sins will be forgiven (Sahih Muslim, 228). This shows how important khusyu’ is—not just for the quality of our solat but also for our spiritual well-being.

What Are the Virtues That Come with Khusyu’ in Solat?
1. Submission to Allah (Al-Ta’ah) – Solat teaches us obedience and strengthens our loyalty to Allah. When we bow and prostrate, we remind ourselves that everything we do is for Him.
2. Struggle in the Path of Allah (Al-Jihad) – Staying focused in solat can be challenging, especially with distractions. But the effort we put into maintaining khusyu’ is a form of striving for Allah’s sake.
3. Self-Reflection (Muhasabah) – Solat is a moment to reflect on our actions, seek forgiveness, and renew our intentions to be better.
4. Humility (Tawadhu’) – Prostrating before Allah helps us develop a sense of humility, reminding us that we are His servants and everything we have is from Him.
5. Modesty and Self-Restraint (Iffah) – When we pray regularly with khusyu’, it helps us build self-discipline and keeps us away from sinful behavior.

How Can We Improve Our Khusyu’ in Solat?
- Prepare physically and mentally: Make sure we are clean, perform wudu’ properly, and clear our minds before solat.
- Understand the meaning of the recitations: When we know what we’re saying, our solat feels more meaningful.
- Find a quiet space: Praying in a peaceful environment helps us stay focused.
- Take our time: Rushing through our solat can make us lose concentration, so it’s better to slow down and reflect on each movement.

Usrah 2 Week 1: The Acquisition of Hikmah

Assalamualaikum, and hello to everyone reading!

For this Usrah 2 session, we talked about The Acquisition of Hikmah and how it helps us live according to Islam. Hikmah, along with niyyah, amal, and ehsan, plays a big role in shaping our character and actions as Muslims.

What is Hikmah?

Hikmah means wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Different scholars have described it in various ways:

Rabi bin Anas said hikmah is fear of Allah.

Ibn Zayd saw it as understanding Allah’s commands.

Ibn Qutaiba defined it as a mix of knowledge and action.

The goal of hikmah is to help us live with sincerity, humility, and devotion to Allah.

What is Niyyah?

"Innama al-a’malu bin-niyyat" – Actions are judged by intentions.

Niyyah is our intention behind everything we do. In Islam, having the right niyyah means doing things for the sake of Allah, not for praise or recognition.

What is Amal?

Amal means doing good deeds—whether it’s worship, kindness, or charity. It’s how we show our faith in action and benefit those around us.

What is Ehsan?

Ehsan is about being the best version of ourselves. It means practicing honesty, patience, humility, and compassion—not just in worship but in daily life too.

This session was a great reminder of how important our intentions and actions are. Hopefully, we can all apply these lessons in our daily lives, InshaAllah!

Assalamualaikum, and hi everyone! Today, for this session of Usrah 2, we covered the topic of Reasons and Sources of ḥikmah from ʿibādah. Below are some insights tied to specific Qur’anic verses on four pillars of worship: Ṣalāh, Ṣawm, Zakāh, and Ḥajj.

1. Ṣalāh (Prayer) – Sūrah Al-ʿAnkabūt (29:45)

Allah says: "Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater."

Ḥikmah:

Discipline & Focus: Regular prayer instills discipline, aligning our daily lives with mindfulness of Allah.

Spiritual Cleansing: By standing before Allah five times a day, we purify our intentions and actions, resisting distractions of worldly desires.

Connection & Remembrance: The act of dhikr in prayer keeps our hearts anchored to Allah’s guidance, steering us away from sin.

2. Ṣawm (Fasting) – Sūrah Al-Baqarah (2:183)

Allah says: "O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may attain taqwā."

Ḥikmah:

Cultivating Taqwā: Fasting teaches self-restraint, helping us control not just hunger but also negative habits and impulses.

Empathy & Gratitude: By experiencing hunger, we grow compassion for those in need and gratitude for Allah’s blessings.

Spiritual Renewal: Fasting detoxifies the soul, creating space for reflection and strengthening reliance on Allah.

3. Zakāh (Charity) – Sūrah Al-Tawbah (9:103)

Allah says: "Take from their wealth a charity to purify and cleanse them, and pray for them. Indeed, your prayer is reassurance for them."

Ḥikmah:

Purification of Wealth: Zakāh reminds us that wealth is a trust from Allah; giving a portion purifies our possessions and souls from greed.

Social Responsibility: It bridges gaps between communities, fostering unity and ensuring no one is left in need.

Detachment from Dunyā: By parting with wealth, we weaken attachment to materialism and strengthen trust in Allah’s provision.

4. Ḥajj (Pilgrimage) – Sūrah Al-Baqarah (2:197)

Allah says: "Ḥajj is during well-known months... And whatever good you do, Allah knows it. Take provisions, but the best provision is taqwā."

Ḥikmah:

Universal Equality: The unity of millions in ihram clothing erases societal divisions, emphasizing equality before Allah.

Sacrifice & Submission: Ḥajj mirrors the legacy of Ibrahim (AS) and Ismāʿīl (AS), teaching total surrender to Allah’s commands.

Renewal of Faith: The physical and spiritual journey reignites humility, gratitude, and commitment to living a purposeful life.
