CRICKET: MORE THAN JUST A GAME!

Cricket, a gentleman's game, was brought to the Caribbean by the English to establish control. Little did they know, while helping retrieve the balls from the cane fields, the slaves were slowly learning the game. Throwing back the ball to the wicket keeper was their way of showing the white’s that they too can play the sport. Slavery was soon abolished and cricket became the dominant sport of the Caribbean. Cricket has developed greatly, from Sir Learie Constantine to the three (3) W’s; Sir Frank Worrell, Sir Clyde Walcott and Sir Everton Weekes, (Barbadosorg, 2017) , all the way to Brian Charles Lara now presently Dwayne Bravo. Cricket is defined as the glue that binds the West Indies together creating the sense of one single West Indian identity. We won freedom on the cricket pitch long before we gained political freedom. Being a dominant sport in the Caribbean, cricket captures the heart at a young age and islands put that to use by enrolling their children into cricket clubs. Almost every Caribbean island has a cricket club and these take children and teens under their wings and mould them into professionals who one day can be able to play on the West Indies Cricket team. Grants from Grassroots cricket programs help make this possible. In Trinidad, in honour of our most notable cricketer, we recently opened the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Gasparillo. (figures 2 & 3) Little noticeable actions like these keep the sport alive and the history will always be in the hearts of the Caribbean people.

FREE MOVEMENT WITHIN CARICOM

Free movement of skills in CARICOM is, "the right to seek employment in any Member State and the elimination of the need for work permits and permits of stay." This movement was created to allow qualified Caribbean citizens assess to jobs throughout a list of Caribbean islands without the need of a work permit or a permit to stay. This act has greatly impacted the Caribbean islands with a greater amount of cash flow between islands. For example, $1 EC (eastern Caribbean dollar) is equal to $2.50 TTD (Trinidad and Tobago dollar) therefore, working in Grenada and sending the money to Trinidad would increase the amount of Eastern Caribbean dollars in the central bank.

This is also a great investment towards universities. In some cases, universities don’t have a specific course because they don’t have lecturers with the specific qualifications to complement the course. The free movement act would allow qualified teachers from other Caribbean islands to apply for the position which would allow for more applications to the universities because the course may be one in which a lot of persons would like to pursue.

There should not be a restraint on where you wish to apply to work if you are qualified and if the position is vacant.

When I started this course, I really thought it was going to be a breeze because I did Caribbean History at Open Campus. I was completely wrong and I knew this because of two (2) words "CRITICAL ANALYSIS". I have realized that you cannot do a book report without reading the book and you cannot do a portfolio without listening to the lectures. I normally do assignments at the last minute but with the addition of critical analysis to this course, I tried my hardest to get out of the habit.

The lectures were great, very informative and well planned. My tutor, Miss Johnson actually emphasized a lot on the topics and made sure the topics were understood. Dr. Campbell's effort to make the course an interactive one was established and I'm happy to have completed this course with the great amount of knowledge I gained.

Through this course I have learned so much about cricket and why people are the way they are. I also learned the history of what created the norms of society and what makes us who we are. I have to say, I was well informed throughout this semester and I am greatly pleased to have completed this course.

"Education is never neutral, education is always in the service of some higher end"- According to Dr. Campbell (October 30th 2017), Lecture 8

The above quote stood out to me, from the beginning of the lecture straight to the end. I noticed it coincided with the main idea of the critical analysis video (Video 1). Chimamanda spoke about her roommate whom she assumed by her reaction to her only heard multiple versions of the single story of Africa. Chimamanda's roommate, was startled at her ability to cook and speak English. This is a great example of how important it is to educate yourself about different cultures and not to keep yourself in a box with only one perspective when there are a variety of knowledge about things. We live in the 21 century and the access to education is greater than it ever was before. We no longer live in a society where we have to be a specific religion to be educated. We now have government schools and community centres which do not discriminate via religion and are open to educating those who want to be educated. Libraries are filled with books of different genres and are opened to the public where you can educate yourself. Some adults have a negative perspective of going back to school at a later age but little do they know there are adult literacy programs with many persons who have decided to finish school at a later age. In Trinidad we have a program names "ALTA" for adults who cannot read and are willing to learn (Alta-ttorg, 2017). In order to see a change, you must be willing to make the change.
