It is critical to have coaching, instructional goals, and content needs to align to make sure that what you focus on is what really matters. Don't set a coaching goal that is separate and apart from your learning goals in the classroom. If you do this, teachers will just feel like it's just one more thing and hoop they have to jump through. If everything aligns and is connected, teachers are more likely to buy into the coaching process and they will see progress towards their goal which will give them motivation to continue. If the goals don't align, it will feel like busy work and just like in our classrooms if a student views something as busy work they are not engaged, get frustrated, and sometimes act out.

It is critical to have a connection between goals and content/curriculum needs because the focus and goals need to align. Separate goals can create more work for teachers/student and do not show a positive connection between student performance and effective coaching. Coaching cycles are centered around student goals. If the needs are supported to help meet goals then there will be progression towards mastery. Remember the ultimate goal of coaching is not to only support teacher practices but to also guide students towards mastery of the standards.

It is critical to have a connection between these two ensure that the coaching and teacher direct support student learning. Aligned goals will help ensure that the focus is followed. It's efficient because the teacher needs to teach the content. They are focused on that with their instruction, and with the coaching goal also aligning it all just works together. Otherwise the teacher would be pulled in a million different directions. You will see so much student growth with everything working cohesively.

There must be a connection between the coaching goal, teacher goal and the curriculum/content needs so that the plan of action is coherent and easy to follow. If the goals are not aligned, it will be difficult to track progress and report data because you'll constantly be shooting at a moving target. When all components are aligned, instruction is streamlined, data is easier to track and the teacher will be more successful at learning to analyze and reflect on their own teaching. We, as coaches, need to help teachers stay focused on the targeted goal and not become bogged down or distracted by all the other things or areas that may need attention. When we put all our focus into the one goal, take systematic steps to improve, track student progress and reflect on our actions/the outcomes, teachers will demonstrate mastery of this area and students will as well

These also need to relate to the content needs because that is the work the teacher will be doing with the students, who's growth is the ultimate goal of this entire process.

If all three of them are aligned then there is focus. When everyone and everything is focused then student learning is impacted much greater than when only one or two or none is aligned. Teachers have goals, students have goals, and coaches have goals. to achieve those goals together there must be alignment.

The end goal is students learning the objectives of standards. So coaching goals help the coach help the teacher to work through the curriculum in order for students to read mastery on their specific standards. If the end goal is not part of the discussion, then the coaching is just trying to "rope the wind" :)
