Contradict

Contradict: you may deliberately contradict your verbal messages with nonverbal movements; for example, by crossing your fingers or winking to indicate that you're lying.

During my job interview, I would be making eye contact with my interviewer. I am sending a message through this eye contact that I am present during the interview and interested in what my interviewer has to say. With this steady eye contact, I could add some humor to the interview and tell a joke to keep things lively. After I'm done telling the joke I could wink to show that I am having a little fun with the interviewer. Afterwards, I should get back on track with the interview.

Substitute

Substitute: you may also use nonverbal communication to substitute for verbal messages. You can, for example, signal "OK" with a hand gesture.

Through substituting I will acknowledge the presence of my interviewer with a wave or a handshake. I would do this in addition to telling them that "I am grateful for this interview" or by just simply saying "Hello, I am Sarah it is great to meet you in person". When the interview is done, I will also shake my interviewers hand and wave goodbye or show a thumbs up as I am leaving.

Complement

Complement: nonverbal communication may be used to complement or complete a message, to add nuances of meaning not communicated by your verbal message. Thus, you might frown and shake your head when recounting someone's deceit (to suggest your disapproval).

My facial expression will complement me during the interview because I will appear happy and I will do this by smiling. This will send the message that I am excited about this job opportunity. I will also be nodding my head or sending cues of understanding while we are talking. These motions will show that I am listening to my interviewer and understanding what he/she is trying to tell me.

Control: nonverbal movements may be used to indicate your desire to control the flow of verbal messages, as when you purse your lips, lean forward, or make hand movements to indicate that you want to speak.

Whilst in my job interview, I will control the current of nonverbal movements through my body gestures. I will slightly lean forward in my chair to show the interviewer that I am immersed in our conversation. My hands will be folded in my lap and my legs crossed at the thigh or ankle to show proper etiquette. Also while it is my opportunity to speak, I will be using hand movements to illustrate what I am saying.

Repeat: you can repeat or restate the verbal message nonverbally. You can, for example, follow your verbal "Is that all right?" with raised eyebrows and a questioning look.

During the interview, when I am asked if I have any questions so far I will respond with a question to something that was stated earlier in the interview. This will help me to show that I was listening during the interview and am wanting a little more clarification on the subject. Or when something is being discussed during the interview I could say along the lines of "So you are saying...?" and this will show my understanding but just wanting a little more of an explanation.

Accent: nonverbal communication is often used to accent or emphasize some part of the verbal message. You might, for example, raise your voice to underscore a particular word or phrase.

When there are moments when the interviewer pauses to allow me to ask a question I will accent my assertiveness to the question. Speaking with assertiveness will show the interviewer that I am confident to ask about things like pay, work hours, sick time off, etc.
