Because of the focus on religious aspects of life, the paintings were often dark and gloomy. Artists often used Tempera, the style of using egg yolk, to paint on canvases. Figures illustrated in paintings were flat and two-dimensional.

Realism was an artistic movement that began in France in the mid 19th century after revolution; it rejected Romanticism, which dominated French literature and art since the late 18th century. Realism rebels against the exaggerated emotionalism and drama of the Romantic movement. Instead, it focused on portraying real and typical people and scenarios with truth and accuracy, and not avoiding unpleasant or sordid aspects of life. Realist works depicted people of all classes in situations that arise in ordinary life, and often reflected the changes brought by the Industrial and Commercial Revolutions.
