Period 6 - 23-24 Simile/Metaphor Show & Tell by Brittany Branning

Your job is to post an example of a simile/metaphor in one sentence. Tell which type of figurative language your sentence demonstrates. Explain what the simile/metaphor means. Be inspired by our class lesson's array of pop songs and their similes and metaphors. You can use a simile/metaphor from a song for this assignment. Use your independent reading book as a a resource; have you found any similes/metaphors in your reading so far this past week? Look up a famous simile/metaphor from a classic novel. Your simile/metaphor must come from a resource and not just be a sentence you make up on your own. DO NOT USE an example from the dictionary. This is a find an example search, not just look up the example assignment.

It compares life to a box of chocolates because you never know what you will get. It was a mother's loving way of explaining to a child that life – like choosing a chocolate from a box – is uncertain, has its ups and downs, and comes with its fair share of disappointments. The analogy is that, like a box of chocolates, life also has an element of unpredictability, no matter what we choose.

It is a metaphor and not a simile because it compares two unlike things (Him and a diamond) without the words like or as and uses the word I am which is a "to be" word. I believe it means that he is a unique soul amongst everyone else, trying to make his mark in history. You can tell this is a simile because it compares Taylor Swift to a crying baby using like, which is something that similes have and metaphors don't. This simile compares Taylor swift to a crying baby coming home to suggest that she was crying a lot. This simile shows that something really bad happened to Taylor swift because of her saying that she was crying like a baby. We can infer, that it might have been a relationship breakup or a major disaster happened in her life, which caused her to come home crying her eyes out.

It compares two unlike things such as the mystery of a man, to a door that had neither a key nor a lock. I believe that this means that the girl had an endless curiosity that couldn't be easily satisfied, which ties into the door having neither a key or a lock seeing as the mystery is timeless and will never satisfy the curiosities of the human race. Furthermore, it shows that the girl is curious about something that is meaningless or is pointless due to not having an answer.

"Memorizing him was as easy as knowing all the words to your old favorite song"

- Be not Nobody Taylor Swift

This is showing if you have a favorite song you listen to all the time. Some even memorize it word for word. Taylor is using this to show that she knew this boy word for word or you could say she knew everything about him, everything he does his favorite things so just everything about him. But if you knew this song she does not have him anymore and it is just showing how much you could know somebody and loose them.

Raymond Chandler, “The Big Sleep”

“His smile was as stiff as a frozen fish.”

This simile compares his smile to a frozen fish. It could mean that their smile is very fake and tight, and they are feeling uncomfortable or unwilling. It could also mean that while they were smiling, something shocking happened and they had not gotten over it yet.

"Old Marley was dead as a door-nail."

-A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

This simile compares Marley, a character who is deceased, to a door-nail. This could signify that Marley is similar to a door-nail, which, just like Marley, is not alive, so the author is describing Marley as not living. This is a simile because it compares Marley to a door-nail using the word "as".

“His determination was a driving force.” – Movie: “Drive”

This is a metaphor. A metaphor compares two things. For example, this metaphor is comparing his determination to a driving force. This metaphor conveys someone’s motivation and resolve by comparing their determination to a propelling and powerful force.

"Life is a roller coaster."-Riding the bullet, by Mick Garris.

This metaphor compares life to a roller coaster. This metaphor shows how life’s ups and downs are like the thrilling and unpredictable experience of riding a roller coaster. Some examples of this could be if you got a pop quiz at school, or if someone close to you got sick and passed away or if someone you know got involved in a car crash and didn't make it out.

"I'm going off the rails on a crazy train" -Ozzy Osbourne

This is a metaphor because it compares two things without using the words "like" or "as". The two things he is comparing here is a train falling off the rails, and his mental state. He goes on to sing about how sometimes the system beats people down, and he just wishes that people "learn how to love and forget how to hate", but his mental state is falling of the rails because some people can't do this.

"The children were like sponges, eager for knowledge" - Katherine Johnson in her autobiography

This is a simile that Katherine uses to describe students at the elementary school. This is a simile because she uses the word "like" to compare a sponge and children. Katherine used a sponge to compare the children because the children were too excited to show their excitement for learning. This could mean that the children were very eager about their education and this is also a good thing that they are also very concerned about their education which is a good thing that they wanted to learn.

¨Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.¨

-Albert Einstein

This is a simile because it compares the process of riding a bike and human life. This simile tells us that when you are riding a bike you have to keep going so you will not fall in the process and the same goes for a human life. We are also aware that this quote is a simile because it uses the word ¨like¨ in the sentence.
