         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Research suggests that talking and texting on a mobile phone while driving impacts cognitive load thus leading to poorer driving performance.</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>Crisper et al. 2018 found that drivers had poorer lane and speed control when texting relative to when talking on a cell phone.</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>Texting requires more physical manipulation compared to talking (Reed &amp; Robbins, 2008).</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>Talking on the phone has shown to have a narrowing effect on the visual scanning of the driver (He et al. 2011).</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>People who choose to text while driving often determine that the road conditions are not dangerous (Atchley et al. 2011). This form of cognitive dissonance may override a driver's belief that texting is dangerous (Bayer &amp; Campbell, 2012).</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Research on a conversation with someone who is present is different than talking on the phone &gt;&gt; they found that surrounding traffic becomes a topic of conversation, with driver and passenger to share situation awareness </li><li>The driving conditions has a direct influence on the complexity of the conversations, reducing the potential negative effects of a conversation on driving </li><li>A passenger who is too 'supportive' by constantly commenting and directing attention in an over-controlling fashion has a potential negative impact on performance </li></ul><div><br><br></div><ul><li><strong>RESEARCH ON DRIVING AND USING MOBILE PHONES :</strong></li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>Strayer and Johnstone (2001)  conducted a research </li><li>participants were required to press brakes in response to red light </li><li>Results showed that those using a mobile phone were slower to respond and missed more red lights </li><li>This was regardless of whether the phone was hands free or not </li><li>SOO &gt;&gt; it is found that its not driving with one hand - it is that using a phone uses cognitive resources that would normally be used for driving </li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>× drivers using a phone, hands free or hand held, quadruple ple their risk of collision (Redelmeier amd Tibshirani)<br>× hands free driving is no safer than hand held driving, unless the person is texting because then the complexity of the tasks they're performing increase from visual-vocal to visual-vocal-manual which takes up more of the finite cognitive resources they have<br>× Talking to a live oassenger is safer than hand held because then the passenger can see the road and slow or stop the conversation when on a particularly difficult part of the journey where the driver would require more concentration eg. a roundabout or reversing<br>× a study by Zachary C Thumser and John S Stahl highlights that hand held phones are particularly restrictive because they inhibit the range of spontaneously generated head movements one does whilst driving which could limit the field of vision for the driver this goes against other findings and studies that were present in the lecture because they focus on the idea that hands free and hand held mobile usage is equally as bad in terms of reducing driving performance <br><br></div>]]></description>
