Firstly I got a chunk of clay about the size of my fist and molded it into a pinch pot by pushing my thumb into the middle. I would stretch and pinch the clay to the thickness of which I desired and made sure not to keep it too thin or thick. Once it was the shape to my liking, I put some water on my finger and smoothed out some of the cracks or thicker sides until again it was to my liking which is the little pinch pot seen there. And third step, I got a piece of clay and rolled it in my hand until it turned into that shape. That will be the legs and before I put any on I measured to see if all would be same length and thickness.

After all my legs were laid down, I started to attach the back legs. I would slip and score both the pinch bot base and then the bottom of the leg. I would wrap around a “worm” of clay over where I attached the two pieces just to be safe and lute it together and make the thing smooth but have an obvious bigger part (the look I wanted). I did this with the front as well and flipped it over even in the plastic stage to see if any legs wouldn’t touch the ground or if any were too long. One was too long so I cut it down to size and I trimmed each leg at the tip so it would stand completely flat. I stood it up again and each leg held and I pushed some of the leg to stand curving a bit more like how an animal would stand.

I added a small, round tail because I felt it needed something extra and was lacking a little. Plus I like the look of being confused what animal it’s supposed to be, I don’t even know what animal it’s supposed to be!

Next, the creature needed its head. What I did was similar to the legs; which I took a small piece of clay and rolled it until it was a “worm” shape. I made tiny ears from two dots of extra clay from the pinch pot. I did this by taking each dot and squeezing them a bit in a circular motion and finally slipped and scored them to the head. Then I slipped and scored both parts of the clay, the pot and the end of the head. Then got the tiny coil and wrapped it around the head to lute the two together tightly.

This step was to tidy up any mistakes, cracks or extra bits of clay that might have gotten stuck somehow. I took a damp sponge and wiped down everything and after it was a noticeable darker color was water absorption, I ran my fingers over it to smooth it out.

I remembered this was going to be a planter and all good planters have holes in the bottom for drainage. This is exactly what I did and these holes are smaller than a pea. And when this is greenware I will glaze the outside but not the inside because again it will be a pot and pots cannot be glazed inside.
