As seen in many of the scenes in the film, The Karate Kid obedience has been demonstrated. Stanley Milgram's experiment on obedience shows that when an authority figure is present over 65% of people would proceed to obey the authority figure ("Milgram Experiment | Simply Psychology"). The scene in the film when Daniel and Mr Miyagi enter the "Cobra Kai" dojo, they witness the obedience occurring within the dojo. The direct surveillance from the sensei causes the students to demonstrate complete obedience to their sensei and the dojo. It is shown throughout the scene that the master approaches his students and puts his face close to his students face as intimidation.

In the "Cobra Kai" scene, we also see complete obedience from the students because of the legitimacy of authority. The sensei is a highly trained karate professional therefore has the power of intimidation and knowledge. The prestige of the environment also contributes to the students obedience because the respect for the dojo means that rules need to be followed and the dojo is where the sensei trains.

Conformity is demonstrated in a number of scenes throughout the film, The Karate Kid. Solomon Asch's experiment for conformity sees a group of people answering a range of questions and recording the responses people give according to the rest of the group(McLeod, 2008). Throughout the film, there are some scenes that show people conforming to different rules. One example is when Daniel conforms to the karate ways of Mr Miyagi. When Daniel first begins to learn karate he has different or stereotypical views as to what karate is like. He has to learn from Mr Miyagi about the rules, strengths and mind of being involved in Karate.

As demonstrated in Asch's conformity experiment, the size of the group can affect conformity (Carter & Grivas, 2005). The size of the group in The Karate Kid impacts the effects of conformity. The group of Daniel and mr Miyagi is just between the two people, therefore Daniel has no one to argue or compare with, therefore he was very likely to conform. As also seen, the size of the group at the Cobra Kai dojo was quite large but everyone in the dojo conformed to the dojo's and sensei's rules. This was explained in Asch's experiment as he concluded that in a group of 15 or more conformity did not increase significantly and it was the same conformity rate as people in a group of 3 or less (Carter & Grivas, 2005)

The presence of an ally is something that effects conformity. As seen throughout the Daniel and Mr Miyagi karate training scenes the presence of an ally was not really present as it was Daniel one on one with Mr Miyagi. However in the dojo scene, the number of people in the group means that conformity will either increase or decrease depending on the other peoples views. Because the students in the dojo are so intimidated by the sensei they wouldn't dare voice their opinion if it was opposite to the sensei's teaching ways. This means that all of the students will conform to the rules because 'everyone else is too.'

The awareness of social norms in the film sees the students at the Cobra Kai dojo so engrossed in the rules of the dojo that they don't even question their true personal beliefs. The students understand what is expected of them or what the social norms are therefore, the students conform to the sensei and the dojo.

Group cohesiveness is also something that is seen throughout the movie. The students from the Cobra Kai dojo are seen in the same group at school because they have common interests and beliefs from being at the Cobra Kai dojo. They are a cohesive group which then sees the boys all conforming to the dojo together.

This scene sees Daniel spray water onto his rival, Johnny. Johnny reacts and this results in aggression being shown and one of the biggest fight scenes in the whole movie erupting.

Aggression is seen constantly throughout the film as the 'Cobra Kai' dojo has very strict rules that have heavily influenced the students that attend the dojo. This can be related to Zimbardo's prison experiment as it sees the sensei acting like the prison guard in the experiment. The students will obey every command from their sensei and he himself comes across as very aggressive whenever he is speaking to his students. This can then indicate the values that have been passed onto the students and it can have some part in explaining their aggression outside of the dojo.

In conclusion, the film The Karate Kid, displays many examples of obedience, conformity and aggression. After careful analysis of the scenes, it has become evident that Asch's, Zimbardo's and Milgram's theories and experiments can clearly define the way that people act in certain situations. Obedience, conformity and aggression have endless examples throughout the film and all similarly relate to each other.
