Gilbert forgives the Hutus for what they have done in the past to his family. This shows how he is willing to move on and understands that not all Hutus are evil. This demonstrates his religion as he forgives.
"Even though two of my father’s brothers had been killed by Hutus before I was born, we held no resentment against them. In fact, I grew up hearing about how it was a Hutu man who came and informed my grandmother of the death of three of her sons. This Hutu man also assisted my family in the burial. Later, once we had grown more prosperous, we also employed several Hutus to help work on our land. As far as we were concerned, the differences between Hutus and Tutsis were superficial and not political. While ethnic violence occurred elsewhere in the country, the state of Bururi generally remained free of it” (Tuhabonye 19-20).

This shows how determined Gilbert was to catch this antelope. He waited for a to catch the antelope and he out ran it until it got tired. Gilbert wanted to catch it and he did. This shows how if Gilbert wants something he will put his all in to get what he wants.
“Each Saturday was devoted to hunting. The game we most frequently pursued was antelope...no one I knew owned a gun, so we hunted with spears and machetes. Consequently, we had to get very close to our pretty before we would be able to kill it...When one person spotted an antelope, he would emit a loud trill to alert others that game had been identified. That person would take off on foot in pursuit of it, continuing to make those loud whistling noises so others could follow the animal’s progress and predict its path to intercept it...While it would be almost impossible for a lone man to run an antelope until it dropped from exhaustion and could be killed, working together and taking turns running after it gave us a far better chance...By the time I joined the chase, the antelope had been running steadily for nearly a half hour and was clearly tiring.

I came to a stop and, my blood pulsing at my temples, scanned the area...To my delight, not twenty meters from me, the antelope stood...He [Gilbert’s father] didn’t say anything to me, but I could read in his eyes how proud I had made him...My cousin Alphonse shook my hand formally, and then his look of grave seriousness was split by his smile and his wide-eyed shout of triumph. We would see be eating meat…
When it came time to eat, my father asked me to step forward. He took his machete and cut off a piece of the antelope heart. Though we were Catholic, we held onto some of our ancestral beliefs, and one of those was that an animal’s spirit resides in the heart. Since I was instrumental in conquering that animals and its spirit, it was only right I should ingest some [of] it. In doing so, I would take in some of the antelope’s qualities, and I [at age 10] was eager to see if I would later be able to run faster and longer” (Tuhabonye 30-33).
