It aids in development before any gaps widen, helping to build a strong foundation. This strategy makes reading much less intimidating. I also noticed her say “now when you see this word, you will be able to read it.” I believe this break down strategy as well as the high encouragement is a great way to get in touch with all students as well as multicultural learners. I also see how the repetition would be important for them to understand the word and really help it stick in their brains, especially if English is not their first language.

It is explained in this video how it is most important to get to know your students as individuals and allow them to bring their experiences into the classroom to help encourage diversity and variation. It is also explained that feedback is highly important if not entirely necessary to guiding someone to learning a new language. It is also essential to understanding that students will be at different stages of learning and understanding.

I plan to recognize and use all of these tools in my classroom. When kids get help early with skills like phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension, they build a stronger foundation and feel more confident. If reading difficulties are not caught early, students can fall behind and have a harder time catching up later. Early support makes it easier for them to succeed and enjoy reading.

In the video, they talk about making meaningful connections with your students and allowing them to be their authentic selves. Lastly, I plan to be there as a support person when needed so that I can allow my students the opportunity to explore things on their own but use me as a guide they know they can lean on when needing help.

This is beneficial for the student because they can stay on track with the reading, and if they are struggling or mess up a word, the teacher is right there to help them along.

An experience I had with choral reading was in upper elementary school and middle school. We were assigned a book that the whole class had to read, and we would do read-aloud periods during class. This usually worked where we would go around the classroom and each person would read a paragraph. This was helpful to me because most of the time I wasn't very interested in the book, so hearing it aloud and reading it together helped me focus on it.

It gives students the opportunity to read aloud to the class building up their confidence and teachers are able to hear their pace, expression, and fluency. When I was in elementary school we would choral read a lot. I personally did not like choral reading. As a shy, introverted student I would always get nervous having to read aloud. I would not be able to focus on what was read before because I was only thinking about what and when I had to read. I understand why teachers use this strategy, it was just not something I liked as a child.

She tells them to write the word, say the word, spell the word and does it along with them. She then explains where they may see that word (she) in the story and what it means.

Balanced reading instruction ensures that students receive a well-rounded, student-centered approach to learning. Students experience authentic, meaningful literary experiences in a variety of forms. Instruction is explicit, interactive, and engaging. I experienced balanced reading instruction throughout elementary school. Every teacher I had, K-5, would combine shared reading, guided reading, conferences, literary circles, and independent reading(with books of choice). I remember having literacy activities integrated into all content areas and being aware of my reading progress at all times. Alongside literary activities, my elementary school participated in AR testing. This process would start with choosing a book to read independently(within our determined reading level), then we would be tested on how well we comprehended the book by answering 5-15 questions on a computer. With each test we took, we would also meet with a teacher during the conference so that she could discuss our results and test our comprehension another way. The teacher would then determine if we should stay at our current reading level, or if we should be assigned to a lower/higher level.

She was instructing them when to point to a word, when to read the word aloud, when to spell the word aloud, and when to write a word down. Ms. McCloskey was reinforcing when to use the word and how to identify the word by explaining how/why the word is used in the text. This helps the students better comprehend the reading. It is important to use explicit instruction with ELLs because they are more at risk of falling behind their peers. By using minilessons for identification, repetition, and guided practice, Ms. McCloskey is ensuring that her students will be able to read and comprehend text, and stay on par with their peers.

The teacher is supporting their reading during 'Choral Reading' by following along, reading aloud with them, helping with the pronunciation of words, and having their peers follow along. This way of expanding their learning is helpful, it is more time consuming, but the fluency that comes along with it, is worth it!

My experience with choral reading is genuinely getting a better understanding of the topic. It's easier to remain focused and attentive to the task at hand and be more involved. It also clarifies any questions or concerns you may have had about a sentence or word in particular. Choral reading has definitely helped me in these ways thus far throughout my educational career.

A balanced reading instruction is an approach that blends both phonics - based instruction and whole language strategies to teach reading skill comprehensively.

As a young reader, I was able to experience the different steps to beginning letter sounds and then eventually reading on my own. I would work with my classroom teacher to learn the tasks needed to be successful. I always felt super accomplished at the end. As I grew more in my reading abilities, we would have class discussions and talk about the chapter read or over the questions that we had to focus on. I felt that my teachers were always pretty successful in getting the class as a whole to respond attentively to the lesson and objectives.

Ms. McCloskey is using explicit instruction very well! In the video, you can see that she has a lot of repetition. She asks students questions to check for understanding. Seeing if the students can read and write the word that they are about to experience in their book/reading. She asks related questions to the rading, and breaking things down to a level that the students would understand. Not introducing very many new topics/ideas. But gives them encouragement and examples throughout the whole process.

This is important for multilingual learners because the students deserve to have clear and direct guidance just like their peers. It breaks down the barriers that the student might otherwise experience without their instructor present. Helping guide them through. I think this is a great step in the process of a multilingual learner to master the content necessary to be great in the classroom.
