Bosnia and Herzegovina declared their independence from the Republic of Yugoslavia. Serbia leader Radovan Karadžić was unhappy and sent troops to the capital of Bosnia, Sarajevo to assault the Bosnians. They went to other areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina and found other Croats and Bosniaks and attacked them and their culture. They attacked their culture by destroying historical artifacts, books, and buildings. The United Nations peacekeeping force or "UNPROFOR" said they would provide a safe space for all enclaves in the following Bosnian towns Sarajevo, Bihac, Zepa, Gorazde, Tuzla, and Srebrenica, but they wouldn't insert themselves in any military conflicts. Serbs captured, abused, and attacked Bosniak civilians, and put them in Serbian concentration camps to be killed. This was known as “ethnic cleansing”.
