Chapter 1~ The epigraph is a letter that Chris sent to Wayne Westerberg before venturing into the wildnerness. It is eerie as McCandless seems to be giving a final goodbye to everyone in his past life.
Chapter 2~ The epigraph is first text etched into wood by McCandless in which he praises Jack London. This is odd as we know as readers that London was not exactly the adventurous hero that Chris thought he was. The second part is an excerpt from White Fang which to how Chris will face harsh challenges in the wild.
Nathan Rhind

Julia Guay
"The only food internacionales his lace was a 10 pound bah of rice...he had no ax, no bug spray...," (5). This shows that he had very minimal supplies and he did not know a lot about what he was actually into.

"How I feed myself is none of the governments business. Fuck their stupid rules," (6). This shows that Chris was very anti government and a free spirit.

"A rifle protruded from the young boys backpack, but he looked friend,y enough," (3). The fact that someone would describe a stranger with a rifle as looking friendly, shows just how trusting and nice Chris just have looked.

"No, thanks anyway,' Alex said, 'I'll be fine with what I've got,'" (6). This shows that Chris was very stubborn and did not want the help from anyone, even when is was necessary supplies.

The chapters begin with the story of McCandless hitchhiking in Alaska as a young adult, now calling himself Alex. Gallien, who had picked up "Alex" attempts to scare off hMcCandless from going into the Alaskan wilderness through stories and McCandless' lack of supplies, but McCandless remains unphased. Chapter 2 starts with a brief history of the area in Alaska that Chris McCandless occupies, and how a bus arrived there. On a September day in 1992, six human visitors happened to visit that bus, and find Chris McCandless' body inside, with an SOS note taped to the door

"He had an answer for everything I threw at him" (6). Gallien tries to persuade McCandless to stay away from the wild, but he wouldn't budge. We learn from this how stubborn McCandless is.

"Hell no. How I feed myself is none of the government's business. Fuck their stupid rules" (6).
This is McCandless's response when Gallien asks him if he has a hunting liscense. We learn from this how McCandless does not like being controlled. He wants to lead his own life.

Krakauer may include these quotes to persuade our view on McCandless and exemplify his key character traits.
