Having looked over ScreenPal, I can say I am very impressed. It is such a versatile platform, and while it may not have the best of all possible programs, it can be a very effective app to use for the general teacher.

While it will require some significant training on its use, by combining video editing, image editing, content hosting, screenshots, screen recording and interactive video into the same app, it allows for the programs to communicate seamlessly, and reduce the glitches and formatting issues that come from uploading between apps. It seems this app would be a good replacement for quite a few other programs, and for students can be a great way to engage with these tech skills in an environment for which support is available (through their support section).

I would consider this app to be an Augmentation, and perhaps even a Redefinition, as the ability to integrate these different forms of content into one system enables much freedom in design and presentation.

While I can see some small scale uses for this app, I do not believe it is an effective use of ICT for the classroom, and does not provide much educational value. The opportunity for the kind of data collection where this app would be effective is unlikely to present itself for the general teacher, and especially not the student. While it has some useful benefits to comparing different items against each other and quickly changing what is being compared, the additional time it would take to generate the Excel file and upload it would likely overtake any perceived gains.

Furthermore, this is not a student-facing app, and database systems already exist within education that suit the role this app is trying to replicate.

Personally, I would not even consider this to be on the SAMR scale, as I am associating the scale with the use of an app within the classroom or to assist teachers.

Brilliant is a very versatile app that can be used to learn all kinds of information. Specifically I am looking at the Maths course.

This app provides bite-sized interactive problems, designed to be consumed in “minutes a day”, and includes visual, interactive lessons that have game-like progress tracking and reminders, and enable learners to develop powerful problem solving skills. Furthermore, the app deliberately focuses on real-world problems alongside more theoretical problems.

While this app would be a beneficial way to learn math, it would function best as a Augmentation to in-class teaching. It could be used to assign students additional problems to solve and would provide a way to keep students actively engaged with the content. However, the course is not as customisable, and so would require extensive checking and limiting on behalf of the teacher. Furthermore, the app is not helpful for developing math skills in a collaborative environment, and trades individual understanding for group understanding, in addition to providing no opportunities for handwriting.

While I like this app, I would not recommend it for teachers or students as part of the curriculum, but as an Augmentation to assist them in learning more about a specific topic.

Atomi is a program designed to support online learning, with bite-sized videos and interactive content that is grounded in must-have info of Science curriculums.

Furthermore, the app provides assessments, dynamic quizzes, and interactive lessons all driven by AI. The visuals are engaging and clear, with suitable animations to keep students engaged.

This would be a great way to engage with science content, but only in a Flipped Classroom environment. In-class, this can be used, but the videos are designed to be watched, not repeatedly paused and unpaused, and this would likely cause some friction in the classroom. If a Flipped Classroom was used, this would be an effective way to prepare students with content, and provide actionable data for use in the classroom activities.

I would consider this app a Modification that allows for significant task redesign, enabling teachers to prepare all their content within the app and, as stated on their website, “get back vital hours… with ready-made Science resources and interactive content you can trust”.

Therefore, I would recommend this app to teachers using a Flipped Classroom environment.

Student seemed engaged and inquisitive with the multiple options to increase their knowledge and understanding on Math and sciences.

This app offered learning through game-based play, from K-8 allowing students to explore through experiences, quizzes, and many other games to choose from. It has over 2000 science and math's games which align with the curriculum.

It claims to Increasing and improving students test scores, faster comprehensions, longer engagement and higher achievements. The recommended time on this app was at least twice a week to see these improvements. Teachers are able to see where students sit and areas that need to be improved or re taught.

I couldn't work out the overall collaboration of this app, there is a leader board, but again not entirely sure if this is globally or just within the classroom.

I would say this is an Argumentation and Redefinition app within classrooms.

This app offers a range of hands-on projects for students to learn, explore, make and create with other students.

This app aims to increase students' typing speed, helping them have digital fluency. To achieve this, it has a passage of informative text with correct grammar, allowing students to type the words on the screen. I believe this would be an engaging tool as competitions could be started, or prizes could be awarded when students can type a certain number of words in a minute. This app helps students develop the necessary skills for the future and may increase academic performance as students become quicker in typing, aiding their efficiency with technology use.

The use of the app would have required the teacher to redesign a lesson, as access to this app was not possible before the use of technology in schools.

A disadvantage of this app can include students becoming distracted from the lesson as they are too focused on beating their previous score.

Secondary Learning App - Quizlet

Quizlet is a flashcard program that I personally used in high-school, particularly for language learning. Teachers were able to create flashcard decks to be shared with a class, and it included games that students could compete against their classmates to get the fastest score (Match, Gravity), generating tests with multiple means of answering (matching, typing definitions). However, in recent years much of the features have been put behind a paywall, reducing Quizlet's capacity to only a flashcard app. When I revisited it, I was really disappointed with this decision. Additionally, they have incorporated Artificial Intelligence which claims to take study notes and turn them into flashcards for you. However, I think the production of the flashcards themselves is a learning process that artificial intelligence takes away.

They have also introduced a chatbot that students can interact with to learn the content, ask questions and quiz them. I wonder about the accuracy of this.

Therefore, when I consider at what level Quizlet sits in the SAMR model, the paywalled aspects reduce it to an augemented studying tool, with redefinition if you pay for the tool and use the AI.

In terms of flashcard softwares, I believe that Anki is better for studying.

References

Quizlet Inc.

Anki is the alternative that I suggested, as the desktop software is free, it cloud syncs, meaning you can study flashcards on your phone (via the website) has multiple formats for flashcards and promotes spaced repetition. It was really helpful for memorisation in high-school, adjusting what I studied based on how I rated the difficulty (easy, medium, hard, again).

I see this as a much more valuable tool for memorisation than Quizlet.
