By looking at the covers of each of the books in the author study, students will begin to get familiar with the texts. A brief overview of the main characters and their characteristics (focusing on bravery) will be given to the students. To spark the interest of the students, I will start off with an activity to introduce the author study as well as the essential questions. Students will be asked to draw a picture of someone or something that they think embodies the word "brave" and a brief description of why they chose who they chose.

They will begin each entry with an emoji or smiley face that describes their overall feelings about the reading.
Biographical response: after reading Autumn Street, students will make a living timeline of the events in the stories as well as Lois Lowry's life growing up in World War II.
Critical response: Since none of these books are illustrated, students will be asked to illustrate parts of the text they found the most compelling. This will require students to think critically about what the text is saying to create an accurate drawing.
- Students will also do a story map for Gossamer to monitor comprehension since the reading will be done at home
