During a stop at Konya, Poirot overhears a strange conversation between Miss Debenham and Colonel Arbuthnot, where she says, "Not now. When it's all over." This puzzles Poirot. The next day, the train stops unexpectedly due to a small fire. Miss Debenham becomes very worried about missing their connection to the Orient Express, but the problem is quickly resolved.

In Istanbul, Poirot receives an urgent telegram calling him back to London. He goes to the Tokatlian Hotel to arrange his journey on the Orient Express. There, he meets his old friend M. Bouc, who works for the train company ( if i`m not mistaken, he is the head of the company).

At the hotel, Poirot also notices two men: a friendly young American and an older man with kind look but cruel eyes(like a wild animal hiding in a cage). This older man turns out to be Mr. Ratchett.

When Poirot tries to book a compartment on the Orient Express, he finds it's unexpectedly full. M. Bouc helps him get a shared compartment with the young American, whose name is MacQueen. As the train departs, Poirot observes the various passengers in the restaurant carriage. There's a lot of people from different countries and backgrounds, including an American lady named Mrs. Hubbard, and a Hungarian couple.

Mr. Ratchett approaches Poirot and asks him to work for him, saying someone has threatened to kill him. Ratchett offers a lot of money, but Poirot refuses, saying he doesn't like Ratchett's face. That night, Poirot is woken by a cry and a bell ringing. He hears some commotion in the corridor and in Ratchett's compartment next door.

Later, Mrs. Hubbard causes a " noisy problem", claiming there's a man in her room.

The conductor informs Poirot that the train has stopped due to heavy snow on the tracks. Poirot tries to go back to sleep but is woken again by a loud noise from Ratchett's compartment. When he looks out, he sees a woman in a red dressing gown in the corridor, but everything else seems quiet. The chapter ends with Poirot finally falling asleep, unaware of the events that are about to unfold.
