This shows how the old guy is taking advantage of Esperanza’s kindness.

In “Hips” they are trying to talk about something that will happen to them when they are older they say “It’s bones that tell you if a skeleton was a man when it was man or which was a women.” That’s shows that both vignette talk about how they want to be older. 

 The thing that relates to the story is that in “The First Job” Esperanza’s confidence gets fooled by old man. According to the text the old man tells Esperanza that is his birthday and if he can get a kiss but he grabs her fade and kisses her in the mouth. That shows that Esperanza’s confidence was broke.

I have always felt that I never need to trust in the streets even in a restaurant. I’m always cautious and I never trust anyone.

Another piece of evidence from "Hips" is "She is in a world we don't belong to anymore." This shows that they're growing while Nenny is still young and doesn't not understand what they are talking about.

This shows the girls getting older because men are starting to look at them differently because their growing up. A example from “Hips” that supports the idea that they both have similar themes is “What I’m saying is who here is ready? You gotta be able to know what to do with hips when you get them. You gotta know how to walk with them” this shows the girls growing up because it’s like their preparing to get hips.
