The Spanish Flu well known as Influenza pandemic was first discovered in 1918. The first documented case was at Kansas , USA. After this the world war I started and spreaded the disease through soldiers and animals. Further cases recorded in France, Germany and the United Kingdom in April. Two years later, nearly a third of the global population, or an estimated 500 million people, had been infected in four successive waves. Estimates of deaths range from 17 million to 50 million and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the deadliest pandemics.

The 1970 Bhola cyclone (Also known as the Great Cyclone of 1970) was a devastating tropical cyclone that struck East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh) and India's West Bengal on November 11, 1970. It remains the deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded and one of the world's deadliest natural disasters. At least 300,000 people lost their lives in the storm, possibly as many as 500,000, primarily as a result of the storm surge that flooded much of the low-lying islands of the Ganges Delta. Bhola was the sixth and strongest cyclonic storm of the 1970 North Indian Ocean cyclone season.

The 1976 Tangshan earthquake (Great Tangshan earthquake), was a 7.6 earthquake that hit the region around Tangshan, Hebei, China, at 3:42 a.m. on 28 July 1976. The maximum intensity of the earthquake was XI (Extreme) on the Mercalli scale. In minutes, 85 percent of the buildings in Tangshan collapsed or were rendered unusable, all services failed, and most of the highway and railway bridges collapsed or were seriously damaged. The official report claimed 242,769 deaths and 164,851 serious injuries in Tangshan, but when taken into account the missing, the injured who later died and the deaths in nearby Beijing and Tianjin, scholars accepted at least 300,000 died, making it the deadliest earthquake in China and among the top disasters in China by death toll.

The catastrophic 9.1 magnitude earthquake that struck undersea off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on Dec. 26, 2004. The quake created a massive tsunami that killed approximately 230,000, and displaced nearly 2 million people in 14 South Asian and East African countries. Traveling as fast as 500 mph (804 kph), the tsunami reached land in as little as 15 to 20 minutes after the quake hit, giving residents little time to flee to higher ground.

The 1887 Yellow River Flood

The Yellow River (Huang He) in China was precariously situated far above most of the land around it in the late 1880s, thanks to a series of dikes built to contain the river as it flowed through the farmland of central China. Over time, these dikes had silted up, gradually lifting the river in elevation. When heavy rains swelled the river in September 1887, it spilled over these dikes into the surrounding low-lying land, inundating 5,000 square miles (12,949 square km). As a result of this flood, an estimated 900,000 to 2 million people lost their lives.

Valparaiso, Chile – 2014 Fires

Once a picturesque place on the Chilean coast, in April of this year, thousands of homes were destroyed in this central Chilean city by raging wildfires that spread over thousands of acres. It took several days to extinguish the flames, which hit the relatively large city of Valparaiso, not far from Santiago, the hardest. This region of Chile was once known by its indigenous population as the “land destroyed by fire” because of its susceptibility to fire. The fire that broke out in the city this year was especially difficult to overcome because disorderly development in the city made it difficult or impossible for rescue crews and firefighters to get to poorly and illegally-built homes and shanties. The fire killed several dozen people, destroyed 2,000 homes and forced 12,000 or more to leave the city.
