Cause of the Great Depression: The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act and Decreased Global Trade

In 1930, Congress passed the highest protective tariff in U.S. history in the form of the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act. This tariff drastically increased the taxes on imported goods, and in retaliation other countries also made highly protective tariffs. This causes a enormous decrease in global trade, and US imports decreased 66% from $4.4 billion in 1929 to $1.5 billion in 1933, and US exports decreased 61% from $5.4 billion to $2.1 billion. This primary source image directly represents the hatred for this tariff and how the American people knew its effects were going to be bad. It speaks of the want to veto the tariff and how high employment rates will not be possible without the removal of the tariff. This cause to me is one of the most important because decreased global trade and tariffs cause the global economy to not be in circulation, and it also causes nations to not want to trade good with each other which is a big problem. This cause definitely could have been avoided because this tariff didn't really make any sense anyway, so removing it would have been the solution. To avoid this cause of the Great Depression today, we should not put highly protective tariffs on our goods and should instead keep the global trade and economy in normal circulation.

Cause of the Great Depression: The Stock Market Crash of 1929

The Stock Market Crash of 1929 also known as "Black Tuesday" was a series of events following investors in the stock market. The stock market in September 3, 1929 reached an all time high and was actually thriving, but after this stock prices began to fall and stockholders began to worry. This worrying led to them wanting to sell their stocks fast in order to not lose their money. This then set in motion a series of unfortunate events that lowered stock prices to their lowest point ever. This meant that the stocks that people had before were basically useless, and many people lost out on a lot of money, making them essentially broke. This primary source image directly shows the desperation of people who lost all their money in the stock market in 1929. This poor man lost all of his money and is looking to sell his car for $100 to at least make some cash, which just goes to show the seriousness of the stock market crash. This cause to me is one of the most important because in this era many people liked the idea of getting rich quick and invested in stocks. Families all over America lost out on thousands, hundred thousands, millions, and even billions of dollars. Rich people that bet all their money on stocks became poor within days, and many families were left in poverty and starvation. This cause also could have definitely been avoided. There were a lack of laws regarding stocks and the stock market in 1929, so many people that didn't know anything about investing just invested all their money just to make a quick buck. If their were laws put into place like now for the stock market, this entire thing could have been avoided. Also, the fact that people panic and sold their stocks quickly is definitely another thing that could have be changed or avoided. To avoid this cause of the Great Depression today, just continue to make more laws on stocks and the stock market and also when stocks lower, people should not begin to panic and try to quickly sell their stocks.

Cause of the Great Depression: Extreme Loaning and Lowered Interest Rates

In the 1920s, the majority of American families were living on the very minimum amount of money for decent living. Around 71% of them made $2,500 a year. Because of this, many banks decided to give people a chance to take out loans of money and make installment plans that gave them money. Also, interest rates were lowered at this time, so people had more of an incentive to loan money. The only catch was that you had to pay this money back to the banks, and many people didn't have the money to pay back these banks. After the stock market crash of 1929, this became all the more apparent. Families that had loaned were not able to pay back those loans and defaulted on them. This then in turn caused banks to lose money and shut down because they could not run anymore. This primary source image directly shows people demanding for the banks to withdraw their money. However, these banks could not pay back these people because they have not payed their loans back yet. This caused people to lose trust in banks, and the banks then lost even more money and shut down. This cause is one of the most important because the extreme loaning and lowered interest rates caused many banks to lose money when they realized the people could not pay them back. This caused the economy to be hurt even more and even more people lost money. This cause could have been avoided by simply putting restrictions on the amount people could loan and also asking them if they could pay back these loans. Also, lowering interest rates to a very low point is never a smart idea either. To avoid this cause of the Great Depression today, banks just need to keep doing what they are doing and again should not allow people who can't pay back loans to loan.

Effect of the Great Depression: The Unemployment Rate of 25% of Americans by 1933

By 1933, 25% of all Americans were unemployed which meant that 13 million workers had not job. 1 out of every 4 Americans did not have a job, and it was the lowest our unemployment rate in America has ever gone. This primary source image shows the desperation of families in search for a job. It shows how serious this unemployment rate really was and how many families were worried how they were going to survive and live the next day. Men worried if they could even be able to provide for their families, and wives and children could do nothing but support their fathers in any way they could. This effect is one of the most important because this is a totally extreme case of unemployment. Never in America history had unemployment as bad as the Great Depression, and I think that this is extremely significant to our history. This effect could have definitely been avoided if there were just enough jobs for people. That is definitely not a small task to provide jobs for everyone, but there could have been a possibility that this could have been avoided if there were a lot of jobs for everyone. To avoid this effect of the Great Depression today, I just think we need to keep our unemployment rate down by providing jobs for everyone. It does not have to be good jobs, but at least just jobs for everyone.

Effect of the Great Depression: Increased Death Rates and Starvation

During the Great Depression, death rates and suicide rates increased, and starvation was a common problem for many families. Many people during the Great Depression had no money to buy food and therefore many starved to death. Not only that, but diseases were still spreading and people could not pay for medicine for those diseases and died because of that. Also, the racist groups of America began to kill more and more minority groups. This primary source image shows how bad people were in need of food. These long lines are called "breadlines" and were literally one of the only ways people could get food at the time. Many people also didn't even get food from these breadlines because of the sheer amount of people that were there. It was literally a "first come, first serve" mentality that people had in these lines. This effect is one of the most important because it is something that many people still face even today. Starvation and death are unavoidable parts of life, but when it begins to get this bad, you begin to wonder what led it to be this way. This effect could not have been avoided in my opinion. Provided food for an entire nation is difficult enough, but when the economy is bad, it becomes nigh on impossible. To avoid this effect of the Great Depression today, I think we should just continue to keep our economy strong and working because when that collapses, death and starvation are literally unavoidable.

Effect of the Great Depression: The Closing of Schools and the Forced Labor of Small Children

During the Great Depression, it is reported that by 1933 over 2,600 schools closed leaving over 300,000 children without schools to go to. There was also more of a need that ever to have everybody in the family pitch in to provide money. This involved small children. Small children and just straight up children and teenagers in general didn't have anymore schools to go to. The lack of money being provided for their families by their fathers and this gave them an incentive to start working any job they could find. This involved extremely dangerous jobs and jobs that could literally kill the children working them. This primary source image directly shows small children in working outfits that are roughed up and dirty. This just goes to show how serious and dangerous it is for small children to be working odd jobs like this. If a child ever looks like this while working, then you know the economy has to be ruined. This is one of the most important effects because small children like these in the image should never ever have to work. Even if small children do have to work, they should never ever be working dangerous jobs that have a chance of killing them. This effect is extremely serious and shows that the economy was definitely terrible. This cause could not have been avoided either because when people get desperate for money, they do not care who they send in to get it. This includes small children, developing teenagers, and even young adults with so much life to live. It is just human nature. To avoid this cause of the Great Depression today, again I believe that if the economy was kept strong and working, these children would never have to work and suffer like this.
