Immunisations work by making us produce antibodies to fight disease without actually infecting us with the disease. If the vaccinated person then comes into contact with the disease itself, their immune system will recognise it and immediately produce the antibodies they need to fight it. This is called passive immunity.

- Ensuring children receive the right vaccinations at the right age is one of the most important ways to help them stay healthy and keep serious diseases at a distance.

- Over the course of their childhood and adolescene, children will recicve more than a dozen required vaccinations, half of which will be administered by the age of two.

- Keeping track of children's vaccinations isn't something you should trust by memory.

- The recommended immunisation scheduled is structured to optimize vaccine effectiveness, therefore isn't very important to stick to the recommended timing as much as possible.

- Builds immune system

- Vaccination is different from giving medicine ti an unwell child to make them better. this benefits of vaccination are invisible. prevention is better than cure.

- Protects children from serious life threatening diseases.

- Reduces recovery time and therefore time off nursery or school; keeps other children and pregnant women safe too.

- They're not 100% effective in every child, but they're the best defence against the epidemic that used to kill or permanently disable millions of children and adults.

- All medicines have side effects. However, vaccines are among tge safest and the benefits of vaccinations far outweigh the risk of side effects.

- Most side effects from vaccination are mild and short lived.

- It's quite common to have redness or swelling around the injection site, but this soon goes away.

- Younger children or babies may be a bit irritable or unwell, or have a slight temperature. Again, this usally goes away within two days.

- In much rarer cases, some people have an allergic reaction soon after a vaccination. This is usually a rash or itching that affects part or all the body.
