The story did slightly suprised me but I did think someone was going to die or get hurt. The title threw off my thinking by the name of it. The story did suprise me by the fact that they kill someone yearly. The mood of the story was cheerful at some small times but scary and ominous the rest of the time. I felt suprised at the end by how the villagers acted towards a friend.

In the beginning, the way the light-hearted story went along, I thought that the lottery was a good thing and the townspeople would benefit from it. By about the middle of the story I began to change my mind about the lottery. The townspeople began to act very nervous at the thought of the lottery, and appeared to be frightened of it. It was no surprise that someone was killed in the end. The only thing that I found odd was that Mrs. Hutchinson was the one to recieve the cruel punishment.

The Lottery was a small book but it wanted to tell you something and it achieves that. This book is post wwII era and into the Cold War(1948) and I feel is influenced by these. It’s trying to tell you that a luck of the draw can be bad and that being forced to something is bad. Like the drafts for wwII only able bodied men, like in the book in a way, we’re selected for this drawing. In a way with Mrs. Hutchinson is the one who “loses” for taking this event so lightly when you never know who will be chosen. This story is telling just blindly following past traditions might be best left in the past.

That is why everybody was so nervous to get picked and it was mostly the head of the family, and the head of the family is mainly a man except one family which had a female as the head of the family.
