As they wait for their men to come, they decide to have a truce of their ongoing feud. I think this is a symbol because it represents their relationship in a way. Since they despise each other, its slowly breaking them. Coincidentally, a tree falls, symbolizing what the hatred is doing to them.

1b. They both wished each other death to whoever gets rescued first by their foresters. With no interlopers to bother them, it was only a matter of time before one of they gets rescued and kills the other. Then, there would be no more land dispute. Pg. 191

2a. "Could you reach this flask if I threw it over to you?" asked Ulrich suddenly. "There is good wine in it, and one may as well be as comfortable as one can. Let us drink, even if tonight one of us dies."

2b. Ulrich wanted to at least enjoy a friendly drink time if it may be the last day for one of them to live. He wanted Georg to feel comfortable even if they were enemies since birth. It had been cold that night and he felt that drinking could have warmed up Georg even if it was for a little while. He figured there was no real reason to hate each other since , so he wanted to be friends since there was no real quarrel at the moment for them both. Pg. 190

The two families has had an ongoing feud. Both men are trying to kill each other because they're fighting over who gets the land. They finally find each other and end up talking about the rules of trespassing. Ulrich has passed onto Georg's side of the forest.
