Key people: Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, George Seurat, Vincent Van Gogh

Definition: Paintings made that served as an "impression" of a picture rather than something realistic. It was a new movement created in Paris.

Style and Why it was created: They were paintings made without brushes strokes or blending, and post impressionists created paintings using small dots to make a larger object or image. Unique brushwork as also involved along with experimentation of bright color by artists like Van Gogh. It was created because some artists believed realism art was the same as a picture and served no purpose if cameras could recreate an image just as well. In the 1870's, a group of new artists took art in a new direction by simplifying an image into a more simple design.

Pictures:

Realism was an attempt to represent the world as it was, without the sentiment associated with romanticism. Realists focused on showing the bad and poor sides of cities and villages. These people committed to improving and helping the life of the people they depicted. Charles Dickens portrayed lives of slum workers and factory workers, some of which were children. A famous example of this is the book Oliver Twist, in which a 9 year old orphan raised in a poor house, who then runs away after being mistreated. The realism shocked middle class readers with its picture of poverty, mistreatment of children, and urban crime. Victor Hugo was a French novelist who portrayed the sickness at his time. He revealed how hunter drove a good man to crime and how the law would always be on his back in Les Misérables. Emile Zola painted about realism. She painted and exposed class warfare in the mining industry.

Realism was an artistic movement that began in France in the 1850s, after the 1848 Revolution. Realists rejected Romanticism, which had dominated French literature and art since the late 18th century. Realism revolted against the exotic subject matter and the exaggerated emotionalism and drama of the Romantic movement.
