He creates this tone as saying words such as "palpitating" and "swooned". He adds in questions and leaves you hanging on wondering what he is thinking. He uses similes and compares himself to a dead body to create a depressed tone.
1. The spirit is grieving
2. How did he think to compare himself to a dead body?
3. Why are they in hell?
One writing technique that he used in the passage was juxtapostion because he places two things side by side and compares them.

This is shown by the advise to Dante, telling him to keep in mind how you enter and who he should trust. Dante developed this tone by showing that who you value and hold high may not correspond with their moral evaluation when it comes to their destination(heaven or hell)
1. The guide is trying to show that you need to see how these people ended up in hell
2. Shows who you trust might have bad moral character despite all you know
3. Dante knows that he needs to see how easy it is to enter hell

A technique that is used in this passage is assonance because in the first sentence enterest and trustest have the same vowel sound.
