For the people of India, Gandhi was a leader and a man of peace. He helped free the country from the grip of the British. What was so astounding about him is that he accomplished this through nonviolence. He was feared by and empire, and worshipped by his people. He led many peaceful protests. On January 30, 1948 Mahatama Gandhi was assasinated.

The major religion that is practiced in India would be Hinduism. Currently, 80% of the country is Hindu. Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world. Unlike other religions, Hinduism has no founder, no single religious text, and no set of teachings that can be commonly agreed on. There is a belief to be a Supreme God, who comes in the form of many different deities. Hindus also believe that life is a continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth overseen by Karma.

For Hindus, the Caste system is what provides social order for them. Hindus are divided into five categories: Brahmins who were priests and teachers, Kshatriyas who were warriors and rulers, Vaishyas were traders, farmers, and merchants, Shudras were laborers, and finally Dalits or outcasts who did jobs such as street sweepers and latrine cleaners. Upper classes dint mingle with anyone below them, and vise versa. You were only allowed to marry within your social level.

Art in India has evolved throughout the years. It began with the prehistoric rock paintings. Slowly it evolved to rock-cut caves, sculptures, paintings, and architecture. One thing they all have in common is the use of symbols. These art forms are all created in different forms that relate to religious or social contexts. Their symbolic meanings all portray the different aspects of Indian art and culture.
