Incoporate feedback.

A quick summary of the steps:

Teach the vocabulary, demonstrate the actions, ask them to point to the flash card, which item and action the teacher is demonstrating.

2. Pupils to choose different combination of cooking acts (verbs) with different ingredients. They need to show the flash cards that capture the essence of their acting, and also read out their actions. (See videos)

3. Pupils check their peer words, regardless whether they think their peer did it correctly, they need to write down what their peers have been doing. (See image)

Reflections

The pupils enjoyed the lesson. The whole lesson is done in a double period remedial afternoon. The next day, the pupils were asked to handle the questions in the activity book on their own without further teaching and most pupils are able to do it independently and get most of the answers right. The pupils are from the bridging class, and it is heartening for them to learn it this way.

This lesson is not suitable for the rapid progress pupils, but I believe is a multimodal experience with reading, word recognition, acting it out and writing hypy all integrated into one. The video recording is done within a 10 min time frame, in a competition mode to see which group can create the most videos. Every video must have the members playing a different role, (holder of words, actor of cooking or video taker), and no one could really laze around

What is more gratifying is after few such game play lessons during remedial, I have pupils running into the classroom and getting ready for lessons.

Connections between Game Elements and the 3 Thesis Qns and teachers' prototypes/ thoughts

1) The Narrative of a game and the competitive nature of a game, does not have to be in the form of a storyline, nor a record of scores. It can be how a teacher praise and reward and exhibits a pupil's work, let in the case of the Kun Len. Through the extension of learning, the pupils take on the role of a chief, etc, but there need to be "ranking" or "acknowledgement" of the good works done by pupils, through visual display, and verbal encouragement and perhaps even token of prizes

2) The leveling up, is the FA feedback. Do not take feedback as learning but as a possibility of gaining new tools to level up. Break down the tools to easily achievable targets to hook on to pupils.

Else, it would be innovative for me to also explore other language areas to use gamification to boost my students learning.
