Kids don’t learn. They drop out. Why do you think they want to drop out? What do you think they don’t learn? Maybe it’s because of poverty or negative peer influences. But Rita Pierson thinks it is all about connection and positive interaction. She believes everyone has been affected by a teacher or an adult in their lifetime. She says ' because you, as a teacher, are not only a teacher; you sometimes are the idol, sometimes a friend, a guide or a light for someone who is lost in the sea. ' She makes a point making them believe themselves even if they get an -18 out of 20 questions. Show them it is not only a -18 but also a +2. You won’t like them all but you should not give up on them. Show them they are the best. It may be hard but it is not possible, she says.

I want to touch the lives of each of my students and help them become a better person for their future. In this process, I want to teach not only teaching but also learning. My focus is to follow a student - centered approach according to the needs and interests of each of them. I believe that if a student likes his teacher, he will like learning and this makes learning easier and more permanent. While I was always very successful and willing to learn in English and Turkish lessons, I was the opposite in chemistry lessons. Because my chemistry teacher was just a teacher. We had very little communication and interaction in the classroom. I want to be more than a teacher for my students. Then I believe I will be a light for my students.

The global spread of English is reshaping the way we teach and learn languages. ELT is no longer just about teaching grammar and vocabulary—it’s about preparing learners for a multilingual, interconnected world. And as educators, students, we all have a role in making English learning more effective.

After all, we should be looking for mutual understanding, not perfect pronunciation. You can find these and more in my video.

And here is the link for my video.

None of my English teachers were native speaking teachers but i believe that they were trying their best to create a sincere atmosphere in the classroom, which motivate us speaking out confidently...

In my video i talked about nativeness and non-nativeness in ELT. After reading some stories and seeing some videos, i've come to realize that teaching English effectively is not just about being a native speaker; it’s about having the right skills, experience, and understanding of students' needs. I’ve realized that both native and non-native teachers have strengths, but what truly matters is how well they can explain concepts and engage students. Some native speakers might struggle to explain grammar because they never had to learn it explicitly. On the other hand, non-native teachers tend to lack of understanding of cultural backgrounds of their students.

I examined the chapter 3 of the book called Teaching ESL / EFL Reading and Writing. This chapter gives a solid base for teaching intensive reading and allows flexibility for teachers. It supports comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar, but could be better with more student-focused tasks, skill integration, and clearer assessment tools.

It’s not about learning alone, but about being active and independent, with the teacher guiding and supporting them!

In my future teaching, I plan to encourage learner autonomy by using goal-setting activities, blended learning activities, flipped classroom exercises and teaching them how to self-assess. I will use group work and technology to help students learn at their own pace and develop their critical thinking. My goal is to help students become confident, motivated, and lifelong learners.
