This film is about the life of single father Chris Gardner(Will Smith) and his 5 year old son Christopher Gardner(Jaden Smith). Chris' partner and Christopher's mom, Linda, leaves as she felt that she was working too much and did not see Chris' effort to support them as the man of the house. They eventually get evicted from their apartment and have to live shelter to shelter as he was doing an internship with no pay for 6 months and not even being sure of a job afterwards. Still, Chris had hope that he would do good in such internship and continued to fight for a better life for him and his son. He ends up making connections and people saw that he was very smart, so at the end he gets a position as a stockbroker. They were both happy throughout the movie as he constantly asks his son if he's happy because that's the most important thing for him.

His memory of his father being absent is a long term memory that has stuck with him. We learned that not all memories are long term however this was a very strong memory. It has also shaped the fact that he never wanted his son to be without a father.

His continued conversations with his son are meaningful he speaks to his son by asking questions and showing his son to speak out and explain himself. He is creating an environment so that his son can verbalize his answer/choices to build a deeper understanding. At one point he asked him "how did you get so smart?" the boy replied "because you are."

Chapter 13 discuss divorce/separation and the possibility of income decrease. Although they split up and their financial situation was strained he always provided for his son and continued to strive to give him a happy life. 1 in 3 children live in low income housing. Statics show that its not always a negative thing to be a single parent household.

He is playing basketball with his son and he says "Don't ever let somebody tell you , you can't do something not even me." Baumiester and Wood report that children with low self-esteem have high levels of aggression and depression.

Self awareness in chapter 3 talks about social comparison and our desire to fit in. Here with he states "They all looked so damn happy why couldn't I look like that? He is using reference groups to compare himself to the others he saw at the baseball game, work, in the restaurant and the people he passed on the way to and from work. Chapter "knowing who you are and liking who you are are two different things.

Throughout the movie he had a desire to achieve more and although he was not were he wanted to be he never gave up.
