Q 1+2: In the 1990's bad management by IFI's and the promotion of financial liberalisation the economic crisis worsened in South East Asia. The crisis was predictable, but they not manage to predict it. Not only did it cause a crisis, it also worsened it, when they tried to resolve it.

Q 3: The crisis impacted education, employment, health care - particularly areas where women were affected. The help packages the countries and the IFI's tried to implement primarily helped the male and the richer part of the population. The crisis also led to increases levels of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Q 4: The structure of the global economy should be more representative, participatory and inclusive. Women should be recruited to positions of power. Otherwise political economy will never benefit the populations equally.

1. Asian financial crisis in the late 1990's. Due to the influence of International Financial Institutions, governments in South Asia adopted liberal economic policies, which exacerbated the economic problems in already unstable financial environments.

The bubble burst, sending the economies of Thailand, Philippines and South Korea into crisis, especially in the banking and financial sector, which had been newly exposed to the volatility of currency fluctuations
2. Treated the crisis as a financial and not as a government crisis. Used a usual mix of monetary policy to restore confidence and contractionary fiscal policy. Standard policy of eliminating monopolies. IFIs' programs deepened the Asian crisis.
3. The impact of the crisis was more severe on women than on men. The women have generally lower wages then the men. A lot of women did not work (the literacy rate amongst women is lower) and when their husbands lost their job, they had to start working (a lot of hours for low wage) and still take care of the family.

1. Liberalization of the Asian market enabled upper and middle class families to buy selected goods, national GDP fell in almost all Asian countries.
2.
3. Women were forced to enter the job market before the crisis, in order to compensate cuts on loans female employers had to work longer hours after the breakdown. A diminished level of education, increased unemployment and risks in health and security occured. Women often were victims of domestic abuse and ethnic motivated rapes as a consequence of religous conflicts (Indonesia).

1.What happened?
There was a large financial crisis in Asia that occured in the late 1990's. Financial system was instable before and South-Asian countries were pressures by IMF and WB to liberalise their financial system. This caused a crisis due to unsafe credits etc and this GDP of thailand, indonesia, korea and philippines dropped a lot.

2. How and in what form did the IFI’s & countries respond to the crisis?
IFI's failed to predict the crisis and underestimated its size and impact.
IMF policies were controversial as they e.g. closed banks even though individual credits are not guaranteed there causing upheaval.

3.What was the ‘gender impact’ of the Asian Crisis?
The overall crisis affected women even more harshly as:
- woman are fired first in case of crisis; making them unable to provide for their families; often worked in informal sector
- countries cut tuition subsidies and healthcare which affected woman far more harshly.

4.The two authors advocate a ‘gender conscious global financial architecture’. What do they mean by that?
