This lesson Megan and I blocked ‘Stay with me’.

Both of us enter from upstage right. Megan is indignantly dragging me to the centre by my hair (I will have a wig for performances). I am forced to the ground abruptly. Hannah directed us to absorb the whole stage which we did. For instance - Megan is freely exploring the space and direct addressing the audience about Rapunzel’s betrayal. This enables Megan to destroy any illusion of reality and breaks the fourth wall. This is also her moment to establish Rapunzel’s betrayal. Megan is dismissing me at this moment. Meaning that I have to beseech for her forgiveness. I follow her like a lost puppy when she sings ‘handsome like a prince. I am crawling at this moment. The low level shows the hierarchy and how the witch is consistently above Rapunzel. This is the witch insinuating that Rapunzel has replaced her. I am crawling by this point. The lower level highlights Rapunzel’s inferior. I also cling onto Megan’s leg. Showing an innocent 16 year desperate to avoid punishment. Hannah gave us another pointer which was for me to place my head on Megan’s hand. This is used in Indian culture depicting a symbol of high respect. This suggests that Rapunzel treats her mother like royalty and is remorseful for disobeying her. I embarked on this direction, and we proceeded quickly. To show how I am ashamed, I will take a moment to bury my head in my hands.

When I am forced to the ground, I land with a thud. Megan’s threatening lecture about ‘children listening’ influences my physicality. I leant back in fear. I also kicked my legs around to avoid her getting in contact with my hair. Also to avoid injury when falling, I planted my forearms firmly on the ground.

I varied my ‘no’s’ to highlight the different emotions. The first few ‘no’s are in protest and volume is increasing. I am desperate to save my hair otherwise I will be even more lonely than I am. As the song proceeds, the witch states her insecurities - “I am old, I am ugly”. At this point I used a calming tone as Rapunzel’s mother is guilt-tripping her. Rapunzel is manipulated causing her sympathise. Example - Rapunzel is lured into a hug. At this point, I fall into Megan’s arms. Although, I am frightened of her, this shows that I stick by mother through thick and thin.

As the scene proceeds I let out sudden wimpers because, mother showing any hesitation to chop my hair. I cry in defeat and still hug my mother because she has me wrapped around her finger and I am clinging on to her leg. She is the only thing my character has in life. (Apart from prince, who has now been cut out of her life).

I must experiment into my physicality more. For instance - I need to show pain by trying to wriggle out of the witches grip. I will continuously fidget and add in a pain-stricken facial expression. I also need to show how petrified I am. I will try laying on the floor tremoring and backing away from Megan to show the audience how terrified I am feeling.

Overall, this lesson ran smoothly. I showed caution around mother. I made it clear that I am a golden child who always obeys mother. The prince situation was a mistake I let slip. Megan's characterisation influenced mine as she was terrifying by shouting and getting closer to my face at the start. Both of us took criticism and focused through the entirety of the lesson. I also had to consider the contrast between Rapunzel and Jack’s mother which was simple. Rapunzel is inferior to her mother therefore when it comes to dialogue, I portray her as timid. She has a sweet voice highlighting innocence and the fact that she has a lot to learn about the world. In comparison to Jack’s mum who is cockney with a loud/ clear tonation. I must also consider that Jack’s mum is middle age, therefore my voice is more matured and has a deeper tonation. Rapunzel’s on the other hand would be slightly higher indicating that she is just 16 years old. As Rapunzel, I pronunciate to emphasise that I have been looked after and educated by my mum when she regularly visits the tower. This differentiates from Jack’s mother who is poor and uneducated and also has a melodramatic cockney accent. After exploring, I have decided to keep Rapunzel British along with the witch.

My overall target would be to relax when Megan is explaining that I must be protected. I tense because, I haven’t been sung to before and I found it slightly cringe - worthy. As time progresses I should ease into it a bit more. To help, I have to fixate on a spot and tranquilize the mind and body. I will picture a calming environment to obliterate any nervousness.

I will also work on my scream when entering. Rapunzel's scream is blood-curdling as, she is screaming in pain because mother is yanking her hair. I attempted a scream which became painful. I will resolve this by looking after my voice and steering clear of dairy products. When screaming, I must keep my throat open as, if I were yawning.
