Does Homework Benefit Students?

Homework causes stress for many reasons. One could be if they have too little time to do it at home. They could have sports after school, and it's hard to do sports, get home late after practice, shower, eat dinner, and then have little to no free time. Put homework on top of that, you don't have free time at all, especially when you have a lot of homework.

Homework can take up the free time we have at home. We spend 7 hours at school and 40 minutes of that is lunch. For almost half of our day, we are at school. We shouldn't have to spend more of our day doing work that we could do the next day of school. Instead, we shouldn't have to spend more of our day at home doing schoolwork. Home is a place where you should be able to relax at, not stress over homework.

We should be able to take our minds off of school at home. Homework can be a burden since we want to unwind when we get home and do as we please. With the activities we do in school, we want to go home and not think about it.

What if we don't understand the homework we were given? Most parents don't understand the new learning system and things we are being taught these days. For example, the math we are being taught now is different from when our parents were in school. It is completely different.

A teacher started to "[send] home thick study guide packets" (Yuen) for homework and would assign work that she didn't have time to cover in the classroom. If the teacher didn't have the time to cover something in class, she sent it home as homework, but what if it isn't something they didn't know because the teacher didn't tell them? They wouldn't understand how to do the assignment.

People believe homework boosts academic achievement, but homework "often amounts to busywork ... [and] robs kids of sacred family time" (Yuen). Homework is work that the teacher could teach in class the next day. It isn't something that has to go home with the student and ruin time they have at home.

Parents should give their children hints about how to get the right answer but not the answer. If the parent doesn't understand the teacher's teaching style, they should try to give the child a hint about the answer but not how to do it.
