It doesn't mean that he's not racist, he's just less racist than others. Throughout the book so far, Huck and Jim have been traveling and living together. He's been decent to Jim, getting food and information in the town and risking his life for it , because he's supposedly dead. After Huck played a mean trick on JIm , he vowed that he would never want to do that again. I believe that he may feel sympathy for him since the blame of the "murder" is on Jim now. " It made me feels so mean I could almost kissed his foot to get him to take it back. It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger---- but I done it, and I warn't ever sorry for it afterwards, neither. I didn't do him no more mean tricks, and I wouldn't done that one if I'd knowed it would make him feel that way." He doesn't like the feeling of lonesome.
