The happenings of the black church are greatly different from the white church, especially considering what the white people do in there when worship is not taking place. The service is more direct in the manor of who they pray for, naming out who the person directly. The church has one hymn book which the hymn leader reads from followed by the rest of the church repeating. On the weekends the church is a bustling center of worship for the black community, however the white folk gamble in there on the week days.

When someone hears something interesting, they ask questions because they're curious about what they hear and want to know more. Scott asked Cal about "rape" because they were talking to Reverend Sykes about a local black man and his wife. She asked him why they were taking money up for his wife. Zeebo took up the money and wouldn't let anybody leave unless they got to 10 dollars. The kids then asked why the money was collected and Reverend was explaining how she couldn't take care of the 3 kids by herself because her husband supposedly "raped" someone. When they left the church Scout quickly asked what rape was to Cal, and Cal told her it was up to her dad to explain what "rape" was.

On any given day as Jem reads to Mrs. Dubose if he skips a word, Mrs. Dubose instantly corrects him. As he gets further in the story she corrects him less and less. Jem even left a sentence hanging and she did not correct him. Only her head and shoulders were visible and her head moved slowly from side to side. From time to time she would open her mouth wide and drool. The kids stop and check on her to ask if she's alright, but she did not her them. After that an alarm clock rang. They were then shooed off by Mrs. Jesse.

Atticus tries to teach the children about "the facts of life". Aunt Alexandria's influence is strong about making Jem and Scout "proper". The children, having being exposed to this new and almost fake side of Atticus, are shocked by his explanation of what the children say is already known. Atticus' humble values do not reflect the ones of his sister, thus explaining why these "facts" do not pertain to him or his children.

Aunt Alexandra's influence on the Finch Household is generally negative in the eyes of Scout because Aunt Alexandra is trying to change Scout's appearance, personality, and attitude. Aunt Alexandra goes about her day by, having family gatherings at the Finch house, she drink tea, and tries to make scout more socially active with her cousin Lily Brooke.
