Collaborative learning is a way to help the students to explore and discover the world around them not only through self discovery, but through the discovery of others! Looking back on my years throughout school I am well aware that my favorite lessons as well as the discoveries I still remember and carry with me to this very day were some of which I learned through my peers. I appreciate hoe it does not only strengthen academic knowledge and learning, but it also aids students in strengthening their social skills. In order to work in a group, students need to communicate with one another and share ideas. They need to know social skills such a taking turns talking during a conversation, making eye contact, participating in the conversation and contributing thoughts, and being a good listener. These are skills that will follow a person throughout their life- they are crucial skills to have throughout school and in a career. This way of learning is also unique because it is not all about a teacher lecturing and speaking to the class, but the students must problem solve and think for themselves, with the help of their peers, using the teacher for support. Cooperative learning requires students not only to work together, but individually as well. This is magnificent because students gain a sense of independence and self discovery. The jigsaw method really interested me because it allows students to teach each other. It has been proven that students retain more information when they teach it to others. The jigsaw method requires that students do research and teach themselves first. It then has them teaching others, which reiterates their learning through repetition. This practice also strengthens social skills. The jigsaw method promotes active listening because students know they need to listen to what their peers are teaching them. Students become more engaged during cooperative learning activities because they become an active participant in their learning. They are not just listening to their teacher lecturing.

I found the jigsaw section of this to be a very interesting part.  The jigsaw method gets the students to work together and then teach one and other about a certain concepts. I think that this is a great way to get students out of their comfort zone by teaching each other. This method encourages collaboration and reduces the isolated effort in competition. It is rooted in social constructivism which suggests that students can construct their knowledge as they interact with their peers. I have also learned that there is a big difference between working in a group and working cooperatively. Students sitting at the same table doing their own job doesn't mean that is structured to be a cooperative group. Five key elements in cooperative learning are very significant: Positive interdependence (one person cannot succeed unless everyone succeeds), face to face interaction (students need to converse together and use collaborative skills as they learn), interpersonal and Small Group Social Skills, individual accountability, and group processing. I will definitely consider these elements for my future classroom. I also learned inductive teaching is a good way to motivate students in the classroom. Inductive teaching methods can begin by presenting students with a specific challenge, such as real world problem to solve or a case study to analyze. I thought "six thinking hats" video was interesting. It helps students to look at problems from different perspectives. Also, I thought that jigsaw was very interesting method of learning. Students teach and learn information from each other. I would also like to use these methods in my future classroom and I look forward to learn more about new methods of teaching.

After reviewing the readings, websites, and videos I can say that I will absolutely implement cooperative learning within my future classroom. From my memories of elementary school, I remember the teacher constantly calling on the same students for the answers. In one of the videos many teachers expressed how calling on students for answers does not display a whole class understanding of a topic. Another teacher mentioned that creating paper and pencil tests was so time consuming. Cooperative learning is a quick way to see that students are truly understanding the material they are learning. In cooperative learning each student must do their part, therefore they are using their knowledge to implement the material. Cooperative learning is a hands-on approach to learning as well. A simple test can be quite boring for some students; therefore, they may not do as well. The question is always "Will cooperative learning ultimately help the students learn?", and there is many research behind this idea, which I was able to read about in these articles. Having students work together in a classrooms engages them in a more positive way. If students are given the opportunity to work with one another, they are exposed to seeing alternative perspectives along with providing feedback and developing the skills of strategy and analysis. I can't help but look back to me elementary school years where I experienced cooperative learning and how beneficial it was to me as a student. I was able to talk to my peers and it truly helped me understand the material more and I was exposed to new ideas. My critical thinking skills during that time also improves and I believe that working together in a classroom wasn't only helpful then, but it continues to be a huge factor in classrooms today. The students aren't only working together, but it is also the students working through the class together...encouraging one another to do their very best and to take their minds to new places. Cooperative learning doesn't just end in the classroom, It goes beyond that so it is important for students to understand the concept of cooperative learning and how it can be used throughout their lives. Once I am an educator I will without a doubt implement this style of teaching in my classroom. For I feel that every student can benefit from it.

I am always hesitant to utilize a new method of teaching due to the unknown, but I feel that the resources provided a pretty clear picture of how cooperative learning works and how to get students to work together in groups and take responsibility. Academic skills are important, but it is vital that students learn how to collaborate with their peers since that is a skill that will be needed in their future, regardless of what job they may have. It holds students accountable for not only their learning but the learning of their peers, and ensures that students will not compete against their peers, but work with them so they also succeed. This method is said to increase student achievement, make students more active participants in learning, and help students to increase their socialization skills. I am excited to try this method in the classroom, and I hope other educators work to incorporate cooperative learning into their classrooms as well.

I strongly believe that using the resources around you and the ability to interact with others can highly improve motivation and academics. I also think this is a way that students enjoy also, so this means that they will be more engaged and give more effort to the work that needs to be done. I think being able to debate, ask questions and socialize with others about work and a specific topic opens up student's minds to more outlooks. This helps students practice their speaking skills, while also learning how to listen to others and respond. Specifically watching the Kagan Structures videos I watched how the students were using hands-on materials, while interacting with others and moving around the classroom. This gets the students out of their seats, while still working and being on task with the teacher. Lastly, I believe that using cooperative learning in the classroom on a daily basis sets the attitude and enforces structure. Some teachers may be worried that some students can't handle doing these interactive activities without getting off task, but if this becomes a part of a daily routine in the classroom students will learn to control themselves and know how to benefit from this type of learning. I particularly enjoy this type of teaching style because the students are able to have fun, while also learning. This type of method is different than other methods because it uses different tasks and goals to promote student learning. Cooperative learning allows students to work together in groups in order to recognize individual effort. It requires students to go beyond just academic learning and focuses on social skills. Students who learn cooperatively are more likely to care about what they are learning because they can interact with classmates and learn the benefits of working in a team. When students work in groups rather than by themselves, they can gain more information by sharing and comparing their ideas. One video that caught my eye was Kagen's strategies. This video showed how to effectively implement this strategy by demonstrating how students move around the classroom, interact with others, and use hands-on activities. I liked this type of strategy and I think it will be useful to use in my future classroom. When I am a teacher, I will be taking advantage of this type of strategy because I think my students will feel comfortable in the classroom. Cooperative learning is unique among the methods of teaching because it uses different goal, task, and reward structures to promote student learning.

Here the teacher teaches then send the students into groups, then after brings the class back together to discuss what they just completed

The key feature of this type of lesson is the students working together in groups

• When assigning these groups its important that the teacher pays attention to the developmental, cultural, and intellectual skills when splitting students into groups, so these students can explore their difference

When in the groups the teacher walks around from group to group and assist the students when help is needed

There are 6 phases of teacher actions

• Clarify and establish goals
• Present Information
• Organize students into learning teams
• Assist team work and study
• Test on the materials
• Provide recognition

Within each Cooperative lesson there are 5 distinct parts

• Clarifying Aims/Goals-
• Providing Learning Materails-

• Assisting Teams- Here is when the teacher helps when the students need it. It is important to find a fine line between helping to much and to little. Need to be right inbetween

The JigSaw method is another cooperative learning strategy, where one student takes a piece of the larger lesson, researches it, then describes/teaches it to the rest of the group

The cooperative learning method differs from other  learning methods--like Inquiry and Direct instruction--because it fosters social interaction and learning through your PEERS  rather than just listening to what the teacher has to explain. Cooperative learning allows students to complete tasks assigned and explained by the teacher in small groups. Most importantly, cooperative learning gives students a certain freedom that other learning methods simply do not, at least not quite as effectively. I feel that when students are given the opportunity to socialize with one another within the classroom, share ideas, and help guide one another,  it fosters a grater love of learning for children. I'm a strong believer that children learn some of the greatest lessons not always from us--their teachers-- but from those who directly relate to them, their fellow classmates and friends.

Socialization is such a key component for students that they need to learn in school in order to succeed in life. Social skills that can be worked on is eye contact, contributing thoughts, being a good listener, etc.
I love how it gets students comfortable with their classmates, which is a skill that they will need in the future. In the job perspective, students may need to work with people who they are not comfortable around, and this type of learning helps students to become comfortable.
