Summary
In pages 68-71, the narrator explains to us a war story from Mitchell Sanders. Six-man patrols were sent up to the mountains for a listening-post operation. Their job was just to listen and radio anything suspicious. They had to go a week without speaking a single word. Towards the end of the week, they start losing their minds. They start hearing voices and music. They try to keep their cool but they can't, eventually they hear the trees, rock and even mountains talk. The six men end up radioing and reporting enemy movement because they are no longer able to cope.
Quotation/Explanation
"In many cases a true war story cannot be believed" This is a paradox because if it's true, why can't it be believed?
Theme
While trying to keep your peace, you can end up losing it
Assessment
Where and why were the men sent for?
A) To combat in the mountain.
B) To spy on the enemy in the lake.
C)To report activity in the mountain.
D) To operate investigations in a lab.

In the second paradox it states how, “if a story is moral, do not believe it”. It contradicts itself because if a story is moral then it should be honest and true.

Theme: This section highlights how even though some things may be crazy, they can be trusted.

Assessment: Should a “nutso” be painted as crazy forever, or should they be trusted despite other’s opinions?

S-Combat during a war is classified as majestic and beautiful, it's not pretty exactly but it's very astonishing in a good way. After intense combat, there is Comalways an immense pleasure of aliveness. Everything around feels natural and normal, but in the middle of conflict, every soldier wants to be a good soldier that serves courtesy no matter the time or the moment. But in the end, they always enjoy their natural surroundings. For the common soldier, it explains how the war feels like "ghostly fog, thick and permanent", and how flashbacks from war hit you at some point.

P/E-The idea of contradiction is that the more close you are to death the more alive you are. The human nature that O'Brien reveals is that humans value life when they are to close dying. You love what's best in yourself and in the world, all that might be lost.

Q/E-The theme is that in life when it comes to your final days of life, you enjoy and value life more than ever because you ater recognize how precious it is. The soldiers hapter enjoy every last minute of it because they will never know when they are going to be shot. This shows to enjoy life every moment there is.
