1. Existentialism is a philosophy concerned with finding self and the meaning of life through free will, choice, and personal responsibility. It is the freedom of humans to make choices that are not determined by prior causes or by divine intervention.
2. The idea of existentialism is used throughout "The Stranger" by Albert Camus. Throughout "The Stranger" examples of existentialism can be analyzed to expose the true self and cold nature of human beings. At the beginning of the novel, Meursault expresses his true feelings about his mother's death. "I probably did love Maman, but that didn't mean anything. At one time or another all normal people have wished their loved ones were dead." (Camus, 65). This connects to existentialism because existentialism means each person describes their own meaning, and Meursault has decided not to put meaning into his mother, like society wants him to. Instead he gives meaning into other things. This relates to other absurdist ideas that we have studied in class because we can compare Meursault to Phil. Just as Phil did not put meaning into his life, living everyday doing anything he wanted, Meursault lived everyday as if it did not matter. The most important example of existentialism in the book is presented near the end when Meursault is sentenced to death. He accepts his death by saying, "I felt that I had been happy and that I was happy again." (Camus, 123). There was no difference between life and death, everything was the same to him. Even when it concerns his own survival, he no longer sees meaning in his own life, he has found meaning elsewhere, and while not finding meaning is extreme even for most existentialists, it demonstrates the lengths that the philosophy can reach. This relates to The Myth of Sisyphus because just like Sisyphus, Mersault is in a situation that from the outside looks dire, but from each of their own individual perspectives, they are happy. They have found their own meaning in life on their own, even if it looks as if they are suffering. This was extreme, having a character who was so removed from what society wanted him to believe in that it made it a cornerstone of existentialist media.

When they say "romance is dead" we can think about Meursault and his response to Marie's proposal and that he didn't care either way. Even though this phone has these thoughts, they appear to still show positivity unlike Meursault who before he went to jail didn't realize that what he had was a good thing, until he lost it. Just like Phil, when he first started to repeat the days, he thought that it was great, but after a while, and he was continually living the same day, he wanted his old life back and began to appreciate what he had in the first place.

In this book it was an undeniable point of emphasis to make the character speak and act in an emotionless manner, anyone who reads this book will notice it. In this book most of the things the main character does, does impact the next part of his life, for example he made the conscious decision to conspire with raymond and shoot the arab man on the beach and made the decision to act the way he did in court which, in turn got him sentenced to death all because he originally thought that nothing you do matters, when in the end of the book he realizes all the things he wished he did and how his choices really did impact the course of his life, as opposed to the movie groundhog day where nothing he did would impact the course of his life, since almost everything he did would undo itself once the clock hit 6 A.M.

It is the view that humans define their own meaning in life, and try to make rational decisions despite existing in an irrational universe.

The Stranger is one of the most famous examples of existentialist texts because of how Meursault was portrayed throughout the whole book. In the book, Meursault runs into an Arab with a knife and the reflection from the sun bounces onto Meursault’s eyes. The exact quote says, “The scorching blade slashed at my eyelashes and stabbed at my stinging eyes” which made Meursault shoot the Arab simply because he was uncomfortable with the hot sun. (Camus, 59). In an article by John Tierney, it says, “Free will guides people’s choices toward being more moral and better performers” which did not work for Meursault as he shot the Arab simply because he wanted to. Meursault’s use of free will made his development worse as he did things without thinking. Another is example is when he doesn’t think he needs an attorney because he thinks that his case is simple. In the book it says, “Then he wanted to know if I had hired an attorney (the magistrate). I admitted I hadn’t and inquired whether it was really necessary to have one” (Camus, 63). To Meursault, he had a sense of morality but only because he shot the Arab and wanted to get the case over with. He accepted that he shot the man but never explained why, only that he felt like it and with the extra 4 bullets after the man was killed. Meursault became more moral with his free will and he gained a new sense of thinking right before he was killed. This book showed how Meursault was in the beginning and showed how his character was slowly developing through the book. It slowly emphasized the existence of him.

The photo above shows Shaggy thinking about life and this relates to existentialism because of how people are trying to find meaning in their life. The same thing with Meursault as he was just living life without any sense of direction.

Funeral tomorrow. Faithfully yours”, he comments, “That doesn’t mean anything” (Camus 3). This quote directly shows Meursault’s extreme lack of emotion, which is present throughout the entire novel. Meursault is implying that the fact that his mother died did not mean anything to him and will not affect his emotions. Another piece of evidence was after the nurse states her thoughts about getting to the church in the heat, Meursault reflects, “She was right. There was no way out” (Camus 17). This concept connects back to the topic of Absurdism, which is the belief that we, as humans, live in a universe that has no purpose.

1.)Existentialism is “a philosophical theory or approach which emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will.” This essentially means that each given individual within the universe has free will, and that will is not affected or bound.

-Will is limitless-

2.)The Stranger gained its popularity due to the original perspective of the main character. It’s one of the first absurdist novels to showcase a main character as purely an observer, a character that takes care to watch and enjoy all the aspects of his own life. His observations are already very evident in the first chapter where he watches his mother’s funeral, he takes care to watch everything around him, even the things that don’t necessarily lead into the overarching plot “But I wasn't hungry. Then he offered to bring me a cup of coffee with milk. I like milk in my coffee, so I said yes, and he came back a few minutes later with a tray.” (8) Little segments like these really are just there to show Meursault’s character and how different he is from other people. He doesn’t react to things in the same way other people would such as his mother’s funeral. Another very evident piece of this character’s nature is when he explodes in the end “What did other people's deaths or a mother's love matter to me; what did his God or the lives people choose or the fate they think they elect matter to me when we're all elected by the same fate, me and billions of privileged people like him who also called themselves my brothers?” He asks questions that should have obvious answers to them. The end of the book is probably what made it so popular, because it shows the author’s intent outright, whereas other books would use heavy symbolism.

3.)“The only thing that matters is the present and what one does n the present to change the future”. The past is unchangeable so why bother worrying about it? It’s just going to waste your time so just try to make things better from here on out. Don’t let previous inconveniences affect you emotionally, because you can do things right now to right the wrongs from before

4.)Back then, I used to always think about the past and it weighed me down quite a lot. I would have no motivation to do anything because I was always lost in thoughts regarding previous events. It took me some time but I finally realized that it doesn’t matter what’s already happened just because I’d just be wasting my time thinking and worrying about it, so what’s the point? I need to

1. Existentialism: Is the investigation of finding meaning in a seemingly meaningless life. We find meaning in our lives through free will, choice, past experiences and beliefs.
2. Albert Camus articulates his understanding of existentialism through The Stranger, using the main character, Meursault, to give insight into the mind of an absurdist. The main character loses his mother and shows no sympathy or remorse towards her death. During a time where he was arrested for an unrelated crime, “the investigators had learned that [he] had ‘shown in sensitivity’ the day of Maman's funeral” (Camus, 64). The main character then justifies his lack of emotion at his mother’s funeral, “At one time or another all normal people have wished their loved ones were dead” (Camus, 65). The main character acknowledges that he is not “normal”, which is a big role in the book.

Secondly to contribute to the peculiarity of Meursault's situation, he expresses indifference towards his girlfriend’s marriage proposal to him. He had previously expressed desire towards the girl and it had seemed that she was one of the few things he had actually wanted. When she asked if he loved her however, he said that he didn’t know. And when she asked to marry him, “it didn't make any difference to [him].(41)” the previous example of apathy having to do with his mother’s death could have just been a misinterpretation of shock but as the reader comes along to the second example, Meursault's condition becomes clearer to the reader and it is this first person unveiling process that is what makes this book such a classic

One of Camus final notion’s is that we are intertwined by the same fate. No matter what we do with our lives we will end up with the result. Death is everyone's destiny so what does it matter how we get there, his thoughts are highlighted in his response to the chaplain “What did other people’s deaths or a mother’s love matters to me; what did his god or the lives people choose or the fate they think they elect matter to me when we we’re all elected by the same fate”(pg.121). Camus articulates that nothing matters to him because we are all destined to die at on point or another, so when his appeal is rejected he is not bothered because this is his fate and he can’t escape it. Existentialism is the attempt to find meaning in life in a meaningless universe and to Camus the human life is worthless because we are all born to die.

Even when his " love" Marie asked him to marry her " I said it didn't make any difference to me and that we could if she wanted to" ( Camus 41) he didn't even find meaning in getting married to the person who loved him. But once he was tried for murder he started to find a meaning in every little thing he would look around his little cell and find every little detail in the wall, he even found a newspaper clipping and read it over and over again because the meant something something to him.
