In my pencil drawing, I used many contour lines to refine the shapes of the figure such as the jaw, neck, and eyes. Different tones were used in this assignment to define certain parts of the face. The eyes and outline of the face had a darker tone while the hair and other facial features had lighter tones. There were highlights used in the eyes as well, to show the reflection of light. The mastery fulfilled the ICAN #1 goal because we used a video as something to observe as we draw and refine the observation on our own sheet of paper.

I used various tones (1/4,1/2, and 3/4) to achieve the darks and lights in the piece. The artist in the video was using several composition techniques that I followed , which made the drawing much easier to follow versus drawing from a direct photograph. I used the soft charcoal to sketch out the shapes of the face then used the compressed charcoal to shade and form the details such as the nose, mouth, and eyes. The project was really fun to go through and I would attempt another charcoal drawing on my own time if I can.

For the most part, I took my time to look in my camera roll and find images that suited the principle. I was sometimes stuck on picking an image because I thought both pictures or multiple could work for the principle. Out of all principles, I found many pictures that symbolized unity and balance, which was the easiest out of all. Pictures with pattern were more difficult to find because I did not have any existing images so I took the time to take a new picture. This assignment was a little different than other masteries, so I thought it was refreshing.

I took the longest time on the blind contour lines, making sure that it would be as accurate to the still life as possible. I was quite happy with the results because it looked almost proportionally accurate to the setup. I tried to make a balanced composition by having a balanced amount of objects on each side. Then, I used an arbitrary color scheme for the still life with two textures which are table salt and paper scarring for the pots' details.

In my mastery, I have done a digital painting of Martin Luther King Jr using the digital illustration software called Clip Studio Paint EX. I decided to do a monochrome portrait using greyscale while making the background have red and blue. I used several different digital brushes in this painting, which were some chalky textured brushes and watercolor-textured brushes to achieve a more realistic, traditional style of painting. I created a simple background of the American flag to represent Martin Luther King's legacy, which was blurred out using a setting on the illustration program. Overall, I think this was fairly easier to do because I have years of experience in digital illustrating/painting.

This was my first ever tempera paint piece and it was quite difficult to work fast since the paint is a quick-dry type. The colors I've chosen in this assignment was a set of green monochrome colors with a hint of yellow for highlights. I might call my choice of colors analogous because I did use a little bit of blue in the beginning to set the atmosphere. I tried using several techniques in this painting as taught in "ICAN#5 Tempera Techniques" such as the painterly, blending, press, and some underpainting techniques. The hardest part about tempera to me is that the paint is very thin and you need to apply multiple layers as the paint is still wet (if you want to blend colors around).

This causes the eyes to roam looking for the answer...and then the remote control device answers the question. The social issue I tried to implement into my piece was how smoking can eventually kill a person. By using the visual metaphor of hearts you see in a general video game that represents your "health" or amount of "lives" you have; it displays the effects of cigarettes in reality. I used a pixel art style to really show that classic video game effect and the element of art I used in this piece was LINE. I used LINE through geometric lines where there are many horizontal and vertical lines shown in the illustration. In my project, I have used the universal concept of the "Portrait" and painted a portrait of a woman. To give it an additional twist, I painted over a flower on one of her eyes to give it a more natural look. I used a complementary color scheme of brown and dark blue/dark turquoise. A principle of design I used in this piece was "Symmetry", more specifically asymmetrical. Even though the flower was not drawn on both sides, I think that it still balances out well. An element of art I used in this piece was "Value".
