Master Thesis: Integration of Games in the EFL Classroom

Research questions:
1- To what extent can games solve the problem of motivation to speak English using new vocabulary in the EFL classroom?
2- Which types of games have better acceptance among young learners?

Significance of Research:
Learning new vocabulary in a certain context is usually a challangef for young learners. They tend to use their privious knowledge, but not the piece of information being taught. Either because they are afraid to be judged, or because they are not sure of the correcct usuage of the vocabulary. Another focus will be on the issues of learning while and post the Corona time. Young learners, according to different studies in Germany, have huge gaps in their learning process and social life, so they are not able to take the risk of utilising the English language in the classroom. The aim of using games is to craete an enjoyable learning atmoshere that resembles the life of young people..

Literature:
Mainly studies in classroom managemant, competetive learning, games in the EFL classroom, learning vocabulary, individual games and group games

Method:
A survey(!) or interviews with teachers/learners. Either composing my own survey or using a survey frm other researchers/scholars..

I still have to do other courses in the Master program, so I have not collected any sources for the thesis. I will be thankful to obtain more information about doing the research and the other steps

Hi,

I see two different types of research questions, or I could not correlate them myself. I like the way how you came up with a research question considering learner issues. Did you check why learners have difficulty to integrate newly acquired words into their speaking? To what extend could it be Covid-related? What do researches tell about it? How do you plan to integrate that issue into gaming?

Thank you,
Sumeyya

Is it going to be qualitative or quantitative? If you intend to use a quantitative method, have you considered an analytical method to answer the RQ2?
Best,
Yarong

Hi Sawsan,
That's an interesting topic you're working on! I really like the idea of investigating the use of games in the EFL classroom. Anyhow, I agree with some of the previous comments that the research direction doesn't sound quite clear yet. Rephrasing the first RQ and including a connection between RQ1 and RQ2 could be incredibly helpful. Why don't learners want to speak English in the classroom? What needs must be fulfilled for them to speak English and use new vocabulary? What games are there for teaching vocabulary in general? Which of these games are most appreciated by learners? How can they be used to increase motivation to speak and elicit the use of new vocab?
Those are very broad ideas, but maybe they can help you narrow down your research topic a bit :)
Best wishes and thank you for sharing,
Katharina

Hi, Sawsan. You have chosen a good topic, gamified learning which I also find quite interesting. Regarding your method, how many participants will there be for your survey? Will it be qualitative or quantitative? Which results do you want to reach after conducting your survey? Best and Good Luck, Erhan.

Dear Sawsan, it is a very interesting topic. In my opinion, you have to decide if it is going to be a digital classroom or face to face classroom in order to decide what to use (digital tools or non-digital games in the classroom). you can use non-digital games in the classroom and digital (online) ones for the activities at home. After that, investigate the motivation for both methods via surveys. Good luck! Ola
