Idealistic Reformers lived in these houses. The settlement houses were like community centers being the location for medical attention, learning activities, and recreational activities. In 1888 he published Looking Backwards, a novel about a man who falls asleep in 1887 and awakens in 2000 to find that the nation has become a perfect society with no crime, poverty, or politics. In his story the government owns all industry and shares the wealth equally with Americans. This led to a big growth in socialization in the cities. Many people began going out to saloons and soon saloons were the biggest places in the cities even outgrowing grocery stores. Working-class families and other adults also found a lot of luxury in amusement parks such as Coney Island. Eventually the Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first baseball team, football began to grow in popularity, and finally basketball was invented not to long after by an athletic director.
