The goal of this Operation was to secure the vital ports on the French Mediterranean Coast and increase pressure on the German forces. According to my research, Operation Dragoon was very controversial from time it was firs proposed. The American military leadership and their British counterparts disagreed upon the operation.  A leader named Winston Churchill argued against it on the grounds that it diverted military resources that were better deployed in the on going Allied operations in Italy.
