Bubonic Plague involving rodents and their fleas can infest carnivores by eating other infected animals. Plague bacteria are most often transmitted by the bite of an infected flea. To prevent this from happening reduce rodent habitat around your home. Another way to avoid this disease is to Wear gloves if you are handling or skinning potentially infected animals to prevent contact between your skin and the bacteria. Keep fleas off of your pets by applying flea control products. Animals that roam freely are more likely to come in contact with plague infected animals or fleas and could bring them into homes. https://www.cdc.gov/plague/faq/

Patients develop sudden onset of fever, headache, chills, and weakness and one or more swollen, tender and painful lymph nodes. This form usually results from the bite of an infected flea. The bacteria multiply in the lymph node closest to where the bacteria entered the human body. If the patient is not treated with the appropriate antibiotics, the bacteria can spread to other parts of the body.

The nursery rhyme known as "Ring Around the Rosie" was not inspired by the Black Death. 'Ring around the rosies, pocket full of posies' refer to the red spots on peoples' cheeks, and pockets or sacks of flowers that were thought to relieve the smell of corpses and cure the disease. 'Ashes, ashes, we all fall down' refer to mass cremation of the afflicted corpses, meant to prevent and kill the strain within the body. Though, that is considered false by many, the lyrical aspect of the song match the events during that time.
