Examining Repetition

Repetition is an incredibly important feature across nearly all of music, save for avant-garde works and pieces in other experimental genres. From the motif-based work of the early years of Western music, to the repetitive chord progressions of trad jazz and popular music, to the "building blocks" of progressive music which evolved during the latter half of the twentieth century, repetition has been a core composition mechanic for composers throughout the history of music. I agree wholeheartedly with Ratliff when he says "the best of what we call repetition in music, heard closely, is really the opposite of repetition," (Ratliff 14). I agree with this because, as Ratliff mentions, repetition is often used somewhat pejoratively; it is often used to imply a lack of creativity or effort on the part of the composer. However, repetition as a musical element holds great potential in a composer's sonic arsenal because it allows for many motive-based enhancements to the overall depth of a composition, thereby increasing its interest. For example, the iconic motif featured in Beethoven's 5th is a prime example of the application of repetition. Benny Goodman's "Sing, Sing, Sing" is also an excellent example of repetition, as it establishes "b sections" - so to speak - early on, and returns to them so as to denote changes between other sections, as an intermission of sorts.
