In this Padlet you are to write TWO posts. POST 1: CHRISTOPHER'S MUM. Using only 5 words, describe Christopher's mum. These 5 words can be in a sentence or they can be individual inferential language. Once you have picked your 5 words, find at least one direct quote from the text to support what you have chosen.
POST 2: Describing Christopher's dad. If you had to ascribe a colour to Christopher's dad, what would it be. Make sure that you consider shade and be specific about the colour choice ie: do not just say 'blue.' You must then describe in at least 2 sentences, why you have chosen this colour. I would also like you to find at least 1 quotation to support your choice.

Christopher's Mum

Distant
Irresponsible
Impatient
Frustrated
Caring

Christopher's mother was irresponsible in the way that she quickly left without saying goodbye to Christopher, and did not try to contact him in a different way when she was not receiving replies to her letters. She wrote "I was not a very good mother, Christopher" -pg. 133. This shows that she understood that her actions were not right, but she made no attempt to correct herself or fully apologise to Christopher Despite all of these negative traits I have associated with Christopher's mother, she was very caring when Christopher arrived at her home in London. Mr Shears did not seem very keen on Christopher's presence in their flat, but his mother states "he can stay as long as he needs to stay" -pg.245. This proves that she was willing to help him even after all the time living away from him.

Christopher' Mum -
Impatient, stressed, argumentative,thoughtless, impulsive.

I believe these 5 words describe Christopher's mum well.
When Christopher is at his mother' house and he tells her one night that he wants to do his Maths A Levels, his mum tells him "not now" (pg.249) as she is stressed. This short yet important quote reveals to us as readers that Christopher's mum is often stressed and is impatient because of this.
Another example of this is found in one of her letters, in which she retells the time when she had made some food for Christopher and he would not eat it. Christopher's mother says that she "threw the food across the room" (pg. 136) because she was impatient towards Christopher.

Christopher's dad
If I had to ascribe a colour to Christopher's dad it would be a deep red. This is because his father has a deep love for him and red is symbolic of love and compassion. However Christopher's father is also very aggressive and angry with a quick temper and he frequently gets frustrated with others.

And you? What? You wrote him some f***ing letters.” (p240)

This shows the love that his father has for Christopher as well as the aggression and frustration that he possesses towards Christopher's mother because he has had to look after Christopher for a long time with no assistance from her and only her letters which she sent to Christopher. In this quote his protective nature is also able to be seen in this quote as he is defensive of Christopher.

Christopher's dad:

To Christopher's dad, I would ascribe the colour burnt orange. This is because burnt orange represents selfishness which Christopher's dad somewhat showed by not telling Christopher about his mum's letters, since he didn't want Christopher to leave him. Orange also symbolises fire and anger which is demonstrated through him screaming and ordering Christopher to not do certain things: “How many times do I have to tell you, Christopher?” - pg 62.

However, orange also represents warmth and comfort, which shows that Christopher's dad loves him, although he acts untoward and in a frightening way at times. He has a facade, although he may seem angry and rough from the outside, he is a loving and caring man on the inside.

But I am close to losing it, all right? So just give me some..."

The above quote demonstrates how stressed Christopher's mother is. When including the events of the last 4 or 5 pages, one would be able to see that Christopher's mother's reaction is a little too much (in my opinion), demonstrating limited patience. Christopher's mother's limited determination comes from her limited patience. She writes in her letter (page 136): "And I remember looking at the two of you and seeing you together and thinking how you were really differant with him. Much calmer." If she was more patient, Christopher would no doubt be calmer around her too. Christopher's mother did do what she did for Christopher's benefit though. The above quote proves that Christopher's mother simply gave up and did not want to be there anymore, showing a lack of determination.

This quote is used by Christopher's mother, in reference to Christopher's father, and it was said in the presence of Christopher. It could be considered inappropriate for Christopher's mother to speak poorly of Christopher's father in his presence, as this could worry her son, or influence his opinions of his father. However, here, his mother does not consider this, and acts solely based on her emotional reaction to the event. Here, her lack of consideration demonstrates her impulsive and emotionally-fueled nature.

Red represents anger, which is the emotion that I feel is strongly portrayed against Christopher's mother for leaving him, and green represents the jealousy that is shown to Christopher's mum. This is shown through the story that he told Christopher about his mum dying in hospital, and hiding her letters from him, all because he was jealous and wanted to keep Christopher all to himself. Yellow represents cowardness and deceit, especially in the way that he does not give Christopher the answers to questions that Christopher has a right to know. All of this is shown through this colour.

Red is usually a colour of love, which Christopher's dad definitely has a lot of, but is also a lot calmer. The second being that the result of mixing yellow and red is orange. Mixing red, which Christopher loves, and yellow, which Christopher hates sums up his feelings about his dad. Sometimes he loves his dad and sometimes he hates him, and then in the end of the book, Christopher's feelings toward his dad are a mix of love and hate.
"Father wants to give me a hug but I do not like hugging people so we do this instead, it means he loves me."
"But Father didn’t let go, and he was shouting. However, like most people, he makes mistakes and can be blinded by his emotions. Crimson can symbolise love and care, but the darker shade represents his often bad decisions, the most notable of which was killing wellington.

The colour that I believe represents Christopher's father is faded red. In many instances in the book, Christopher's father exhibits strong emotions, like anger and frustration, both at Christopher's expectations and behaviours which can sometimes be difficult for him to meet and facilitate, and his wife's affair. He expresses this anger on multiple occasions, like when he enters Christopher's mother's flat and screams at her on Page 239, or when he grabs Christopher, on Page 103. This anger is represented by the colour red. However, a while after these outbursts or his errors, which are the results of his anger, he usually tries to 'fix' these situations. This can be seen when he takes Christopher to the zoo to make up for their fight, on Page 108, or even when he tries to 'fix' the damage he has caused by killing Wellington, by buying Christopher a pet dog. The red colour is faded because Christopher's father tries to erase, lessen, or 'fade' the impacts of his anger, but his anger is still a continuous pattern throughout the text, so the red is still present, regardless of its fading at different points.

The first reason is that pink in general is usually seen as a compassionate, loving and caring colour. This describes how Christopher's dad acts toward Christopher. He barged into the police station where Christopher was being kept at 1:18 am, shouting "I want to see my son". This shows how much he cares about Christopher.
Hot pink is bright and out there, and is one of the more passionate pinks. I chose this because it describes how he may have felt when he found Mrs Shears loved Wellington more than him, and what led to him killing Wellington. This same caring pink though was what also made him tell Christopher that "I killed Wellington. (pg 150)"

It has many meanings and representations. Red often means love and determination. This is fitting, since we see how much Christopher's dad loves him, despite his mistakes. Red also symbolises determination. Christopher's dad showed strong determination when he was trying to talk to Christopher. While his mother was at work, Christopher would "[push] the bed against the door" (pg. 263) in case his father tried to come in. Even though Christopher did not respond to his father for a very long time, his father did not give up trying to communicate with him. He was certainly determined to re-establish the strong relationship the two had shared. Therefore, Christopher's dad can be represented as he colour red.

Blue usually represents sadness or depression, which are two emotions I believe Christopher's dad may have had to deal with in many situations throughout the novel. At times, Christopher caused his father problems or stress that made his dad very angry or violent on some occasions. When Christopher left his home in Swindon, his father was very worried and may have felt heartbreak knowing that Christopher would prefer to live with his mother, as Christopher was possibly the only person his father had left to love and care for. Dark shades of colour are used to give the colour deeper meanings, generally adding a negative or moody feel, whereas a pale or baby blue would show happiness or hope. This is why I have chosen a dark blue/indigo for Christopher's dad.

Post 2: Christopher's dad

The colour I would give Christopher's dad is dark orange. Orange is a mix of red and yellow, and throughout the novel, Christopher's emotions toward his dad are mixed.

At one point, Christopher describes his dad as patient and easy going. Red, being Christopher's favourite colour also represents love and passion, which are traits of Christopher's dad. Christopher's view of his dad changes, however, when his dad confesses to killing Wellington. This can be viewed as the "yellow" side of things. Yellow is a colour that Christopher does not like and this can be linked with the fact that yellow symbolises deceit.

Dark orange also symbolises dishonesty or distrust. As mentioned before, Christopher's dad lies on several occasions which made Christopher want to leave Swindon to live with his mother instead. It is quoted, 'And I said, “I’m going to live with my mother because Father killed Wellington and he lied
and I’m frightened of being in the house with him.”' (page 166). This shows how Christopher was afraid to live with his father because he was lied to and and the sense of trust was broken.

Christopher's Dad

Colour - Deep and powerful orange.

Orange combines the love, passion and determination of red with the happiness of yellow. I think Christopher's father is a determined man, also having a strong mentality. He really loves Christopher and appears to be a happy person, currently mostly enjoying his life.

On page 136, Christopher's mother says: "And I remember looking at the two of you and seeing you together and thinking how you were really differant with him. Much calmer. "

On page 143, Christopher's father says: "I did it for your good, Christopher. Honestly I never meant to lie. I just thought... I just thought it was better of you didn't know...that... that... I didn't mean to... I was going to show them to you when you were older [when you are old enough to understand]."

The two quotes above demonstrate Christopher's father's good heart. He did what he did for Christopher's benefit and to try to protect him from emotional pain, though the method may not be the best method.

He also says "It was an accident" on page 143. He did not mean to hurt Christopher on purpose. The first mentioned quote demonstrates that the father understood Christopher's needs and thus was able to provide for him better and keep him happy.

I would describe Christopher's father as a dark purple since purple is made up of red and blue, yet the darker the purple the more blue. I believe this represents his dad since blue is associated with loyalty and wisdom and red is associated with anger. His dad is a very trusting and loyal person, his mother left yet his dad took care of him and loved him, yet he sometimes gets angry with Christopher which is the red. So the purple is a balance of the two yet he is more loyal than he is angry.

Christopher's dad:
If Christopher's dad was a colour he would be a reddish brown, as red is generally an angry colour, as his father is very short tempered, this suits him well. Brown is also a muddy colour, representing his unclear morals and inner-turmoil. Red and brown are also opposites in relation to Christopher, red being his favourite colour and brown being one he dislikes, I think this suits his father nicely as Christopher both distrust him and is scared of him, and believes in him a little.

Christopher's Father

The colour that I associate with Christopher's Father is Sapphire Blue because this colour represents two qualities that his father has. This colour represents patience and calm and it also represents sadness. Christopher's father is very patient with him and this is evident through the quote " And your Father is really pacient". He tries to remain calm with Christopher, despite Christopher's actions. Although he doesn't show it, Christopher's Father often feels dejected and lonely after his wife left him and Mrs Shears' friendship with him ended.
