  • What resonates with me from the Ted talk is how impressionable the woman states that she was as a child, while I am a teenager myself, I love to read, particularly about fantasies and mythology.
  • Texts and books can shape our lives tremendously because of how much they teach us, for example, if I were to read a book about sea creatures when I was 6 years old, I would probably become fascinated with ocean life for years to come, everybody is impressionable to an extent, it’s not hard to find something interesting when you’re a kid
  • In my opinion, a powerful text is something that conveys some sort of emotion, and comes from the heart, something that’s real, it’s not easy to act powerful, compared to being it, speaking from the truth is where it starts, in my opinion at least

For the things we were not there for ie; history, things happening in other countries, we depend on pictures and writings. We tend to believe those dipictions and stories until they are proven false. This reminds of being in elementary and the teacher telling us to draw a picture and write about it and all I always drew was a white family who had a good life because that's all I had been familiar with.

    - Texts, books, stories and anything that that we find and read/listen to can shape our understanding of the world a lot because we choose to believe what we see because no ones there to tell us that we are wrong because they also learned what we learned. Especially when you're a child you tend to believe what people say because you're still learning. You choose to have people guide you because you trust them. For example, when we watched high school musical when we were younger we believed that high school was this fun and happy place where you sing and dance, but in reality it's not. You could be very happy, but when we are hit with the reality of things it tends to slowly drain you and lose hope and trust in the world.

Because of that she wrote about things she saw, she knows and embraces, she wrote about those who are just like her, who can relate to her and those who can understand her. In addition, African American writers were able to save her from having a single story of what books are.

    • Text shape our understanding in a effectively way. Just reading texts allow us to expand our knowledge and witness between the words of what goes on in these settings. Whether whatever genre or topic it is, it still has a way to have us think and have our own opinions and let it teach us of what we don’t know or improve what was once low knowledge. Some may be false but our minds make us think otherwise and make us believe till we grow out of that mindset or be proven by evidence and others.

    • A powerful text is when you feel empowered or strongly can feel or understand what that person is trying to convey. A powerful text is when you can get in your emotions. A powerful test is we’re you are convinced that you can’t even deny if it’s false. For example I started reading Japanese comic books called "Manga" and Im obsessed with it and I probably will for a long time because It's what I love to do/read.

It gives a very good example of what a single story is, and how it can have an effect on your perception. By that I mean how it shows the way the single story of Fide prevented her from thinking the family was anything but poor.

    • Texts and readings completely change our perspective of things when we're young and not able to tell the difference between fiction and reality, and even sometimes as teenagers and adults when we read the same kinds of books in excess. We get used to what we're exposed to. For example, only being exposed to fictitious things will lead to fictitious thinking, while only being exposed to books about white characters will make the connection in your mind from books to them being about white people all the time. 

    •My definition of a powerful text is a text that changes the perception or opinion of whoever reads it. If it has that kind of power over people's opinions or ideals, then it can not only bring power to others, but is powerful in itself.
