After her mother had died in a car crash when she was just 15. She then ended up in a New York Colored Orphan Asylum in the Bronx, where she suffered humiliating beatings. She had spent part of 1932 there before she ran away and ended up homeless and struggling. Her Journey to fame started in 1934 when she had one first place in the Apollo Theater Talent Contest before making a last-minute decision to sing rather than dance. She performed a few songs from the Boswell Sisters that she loved, in the end, she won a 25 dollar prize. In 1956, Verve Records signed Ella Fitzgerald to record Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook, which became one of her most popular and significant albums. In the 1940s and 1950s, Black artists faced unfair treatment and were often forced to stay at hotels labeled 'Negro Only' after performances. Ella Fitzgerald was one of the many African American artists to help break color barriers in order to provide more opportunities for future African American artists to come. During Fitzgerald's, career racism was still common but she managed to gain support from other artists at the time including Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe. Monroe's support helped grow Fitzgerald's career helping to break down the color barrier.
