Artist Nick Cave creates "soundsuits that hide gender, race, class. " They are beautiful, colorful and bright, but Cave says they come from a "dark place." He reacts to the world (being racially profiled etc.) by "lashing out in a rage" through his art. Negativity gives him an impulse to create. His art is an outlet for his frustration and rage. Imagine if we give children the right, and the space, to express ALL their emotions through art? To take a negative thing and create such beauty!! To subvert the idea of darkness and negativity so completely!

This video highlights the power of arts as activism. Minerva Cuervas stated that "If there is a border there can be a bridge" and set out to show how the media portrays so much violence at the border, yet where she chose to cross, there was nothing but the water and desert. She also states that "everybody has the agency to react to daily life and therefore generate political actions." Her installation shows images of a peaceful river, stones, objects that signify walking, and not images of violence and upheaval.

Rosalinda Zamora-Diaz
Liz Magor works on objects that are not always acknowledged as "art." In the video she is working on cast sculpture of a paper bag. She discusses the importance of a studio and says that when she's not in her studio, she desires to be. She meets her friends outside of the studio. The studio is a place for her to work, create, and be free.

“I’m thinking so I need to be mobile, so it’s a like a place for physical philosophy.”

“below the radar, but ever present…”

“The work starts with acknowledging…the things I’m most interested in is… the ones that are not noisy…they are ever -present…

“Everyone should have a studio, they should be issued by the government as health mandated.”

This reminds me that we need to provide a space for students to do art. It also reminds me of the students who don't care to go to recess but prefer to stay in away from the "noise" and create. The questions I have for myself are the following:
What will my art area "studio look like this coming year?"
How do I provide a space for students?
How will I incorporate more movement for my students

-Kristen Nevarez

Minerva Cuevas' art plays a huge role in the world and current politics as an art activist. In her project Crossing of the Rio Bravo she shows that the border can be a peaceful non violent place. The way that the media describes the border is inaccurate. Through her art she wants others to rethink their perceptions.

"The problems or the crisis in the world is generated by everybody.

Jo Anderson

The work of Minerva Cuevas, in which she paints a bridge across the river on the US/Mexico border highlights that one role that an artist can play is that of affecting political change. As an artist, she expresses her message about what she sees happening in the political context and help us all rethink our perceptions. However, she does not believe that art alone can bring about social change and says, “The problems or the crisis in the world is generated by everybody. So it has to be also a massive reaction.”
