1. What caused the Great Depression? Describe the Crash of 1929; is this only factor? Explain and defend your answer.

The Great Depression was caused by three major factors. Cumalative consequences following World War I and the economic problems of European powers. The second was the governments pursuit of reckless monetary policies. The Federal Reserve System began to expand credit and pump more money into the economy. The third factor was after the stock market crash and before Hoovers term ended. The Smoot-hawley of 1932 contributed to the three causes. More than 16 million shares were dumped on the market, the stock market crash was only a temporary readjustment caused by speculation, prices dropped quickly, banks began to pressure brokers, and brokers pressured bankers to pay up. On October 29, the market crashed.

2. What were “Hoovervilles” and “Hooverflags?” What does this demonstrate about Hoover’s Presidency during the Great Depression?

3. What was the Bonus Army? Describe their March on Washington and how Hoover had it handled.

The bonus Army was made up of Word War I veterans who were promised a bonus through the Adjusted Compensation Act of 1924. These men marched to Washington D.C. to ask the president for this bonus. Congress and Hoover did not agree with the army. After the veterans did not get what they wanted, they moved into old abandoned buildings near the Capitol where the president was embarrassed by them. Hoover ordered General MacArthur to destroy the town. This made him seem insensitive towards the Americans who were poor and struggling.

Some causes of the Dust Bowl were created by farmers converting farmland to powdery soil after using it to raise their crops. All the powdery dust was picked up by wind and turned the Great plains into what is called "The Dust Bowl". No one could go outside, farm, and live inside without having dust be apart of their lives. This made farmers practice new things and others adapted to the dusty part of life.

The Court Packing Plan was created to make the court bigger. Under this plan another justice would be appointed for ever justice over seventy who didn't retire. Many people did not like this plan because it was against the American tradition of an independent judiciary.
