Puritanism was a religious reform movement in Europe. Puritans wanted to buy to purify the Roman Catholic Church between the time of Elizabeth and Charles the second. These people wanted to purify excessive human influence and return to the the basics of God, while building upon John Calvin’s ideas. The Puritans left for the New World in 1620, which then they established the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

These theological beliefs were practiced by the Puritans. This included a number of ideals: total depravity, predestination, limited atonement and grace. Total depravity was the idea that everyone is a sinner forever in blood and is destined for hell. Another ideal was predestination. Predestination is the thought that everyone is predestined for heaven or hell and there is nothing anyone can do to change it. Limited Atonement is the idea that Christ died only for the “elect.” Lastly, grace was the free gift of salvation. After receiving God’s grace, you were reborn and had the full power to do the will of God.

Salem Witchcraft Hysteria

There were multiple causes of witchcraft hysteria in Salem. The belief that Satan was active in the world and that everything bad to happen as the work of devil was a large factor. People mainly believed that Satan was recruiting witches and wizards to work for him. Many people believed that a person afflicted by witchcraft exhibits certain symptoms. Foreign influence from others who were of the suspected caused hysteria. Teenage boredom consisted of no TV, no CDs, lots of bible reading which caused many teenagers to become involved in the witchcraft.

Witch Trials

Many witch trials occurred during this time of hysteria led by a group of teenage girls. These girls exhibited many symptoms that were associated with witchcraft. These trials took place by someone accusing another of witchcraft and no matter innocent or guilty they were often sentenced to being guilty. Most of these people were appointed guilty just by using the knowledge of the accuser, no hard evidence. At the conclusion of the trials, over two hundred people were jailed and stood accused. Nineteen people were executed by hanging, while one man was pressed to death by stones. Unfortunately, many people rotted in jail for months without anything trials.

City Upon a Hill Theory & Extra Information

The City Upon a Hill theory was the theory that the new Massachusetts colony would be a place of complete reform, where God would be found in scripture and strong work ethic. The community was a theocracy, where the government ablends the church and state. This also translates to church officials being government officials. The church and state were not separate. Education was very important because it was established in order to read the words of God.
